Here’s a quick video of the call. This may be the winner of the worst call for the entire year.
Not getting the right video when I load you link. Here’s another.
Worth noting that the unnecessary roughness call on him for tackling Amendola was total bullshit too, but not as absurd as this one.
It’s the second video on the page, but your link is better.
It sure looked like the DE was afraid of a flag and let up, allowing Brady to run it in for a TD.
This is beyond ridiculous.
Yup. This is out of hand.
Just a thought, they need to get rid of the “hand to the head” rule ASAP. It’s not even remotely dangerous and almost always leads to a silly, ticky-tack penalty. They also should probably be encouraging defenders to swat at or block balls instead of hitting QBs and this discourages that. They also need to start getting really aggressive with blowing the “in the grasp” whistles on everyone, it’s just not fair that offensive players can struggle for every inch but a defender spinning him to the ground or coming in to finish him off gets a flag. They may want to consider a new 5 or 10 yard minor roughing penalty for hits that aren’t severe, similar to what they have for facemasks and running into the kicker. Lastly, I think it’s only fair that they aggressively crack down on OPI to balance things out a little bit.
I think he thought Brady had gotten rid of the ball, and that’s why he let go. It’s his job to know when the QB has the ball and when he doesn’t. But it’s pretty clear that the DE let him go because he was afraid of a penalty. That’s not good for football; players should expect to be hit and tackled.
Sheesh, the AFC south is a mess.
Titans scoring a cool 14.5 points per game through 6 games.
Jags D getting smoked two weeks in a row (and Bortles regressing back to playing like Jake Bortles)
Houston… mediocre as ever.
Colts are 1-5. Luck putting up some points but they have allowed more points than anyone else in the league except for Atlanta.
Yes, the “can’t even touch a QB’s helmet gently” rule so far is the stupidest out of the garbage can full of idiotic rules this season. It’s the same call they made last week when Brady’s helmet was tapped by a defender. It’s ridiculous.
Heh. I guess i meant Blake Bortles. But really, would anyone notice?
It’s actually an older rule, maybe 6 or 7 years old. And it has always been stupid and frivolous. I think most people rolled their eyes and moved on when it screwed up a game since it was reasonably rare and avoidable, but now that you can’t really tackle them any more it’s going to become more frequent and glaring.
I was thinking “Jake Bortles” was a meme about his alter-ego that I missed. Then again, Jake Bortles would have to the the good version wouldn’t it?
On the NBC show The Good Place, one of the characters, Jason, is from Jacksonville, and is a huge Blake Bortles fan (it should be noted that Jason is also kind of an idiot). In an episode from last season, the group had to go undercover, and come up with cover names for themselves. Everyone was convinced that Jason would choose to be “Blake Bortles,” but he proved that he was smarter than that: he went by “Jake Jortles.” ![]()
You’re right, I misstated the change this year which was to emphasize the rule. I don’t recall ever seeing so many of these “barely touching the passer” penalties.
This season there’s been some interference in the real world by Michael and Janet with some unintended consequences. As the Judge said (paraphrased) “Do you know what’s happened because of your interference? The Jacksonville Jaguars are good! And Blake Bortles is, well, sort of good, it’s not clear yet, people disagree…”
Damn, the Browns looked like the team that travelled to Cleveland from the left coast. Just a poor effort on both sides of the ball.
But I was right about Pittsburgh.
Hah! That is funny! I’ll have to check that show out.
It’s an awesome, extremely well-written show, though it’s pretty important to start from the beginning (it’s now in Season 3).
The QB is kind of a figurehead, in a way. The entire offense is a complex machine, of which the guy who takes the snap is just a medium-large cog. Peyton Manning was a pretty good (in terms of the elite level) QB around whom very good teams were built. It appears that Eli has a higher opinion of himself than is appropriate, which does not seem to be helping his team. He probably lucked out in his SBs, but the second ring overinflated his own ego, which has not been a benefit for the Giants. He will be feeling the bench on his ass by next season, if not sooner.
I’m sorry, did you get it wrong earlier? ![]()

I thought they abandoned the 5-yard facemask a while ago (6-ish years ago?), but I’m far from positive.
They did.
