NFL Week 9: Colts vs Pats, and some other teams might play too

Oh, don’t get me wrong – the Colts could wind up taking this one in a walk. I know people who are giving the Colts absoultely no chance, and predicting another blowout. That’s just crazy talk.

I’m no Pats fan, but there is no way that Belichick is going to let them go into this one with a “walkover” additude.

It’s weird that you’d pick 4-3 Cleveland over the 0-8 St. Louis and 2-5 Cincinatti as an example of pointing out how easy the rat schedule has been. Cleveland is actually the only team with a winning record they played, and we demolished them… even their wins, besides St. Louis, were mostly squeakers against backup quarterbacks. I’m looking forward to their implosion.

I don’t know why Omni doesn’t post the threads anymore, but the first time I started one of these before the games I gave my picks/description. After that I made several threads after the games had already started. I went back to making the thread earlier this week, but my finger is mildly sprained or something and I didn’t feel like typing a ton. If anyone wants to post the spreads/over unders/their picks and such, great.

Lalalala! Lalalala! Ican’thearyouIcan’thearyou!

Woo-Hoo, go San Diego! 4-3 and 1st place! ROCKIN!

Here is a good resource to find out what games are televised in your area.

Assuming our **GIANTS ** will beat the Cowgirls (we’ll call that a given) and march into their game versus the Patriots 13-2 (another given), a Cowgirl tie with the Iggles would be sweet.

Or genetically re-engineered mastodons could stampede the stadium, crushing both teams under 5 tons of pachyderm hoof. Either way works for me.

In Niner news coach Mike Nolan blames himself for the shitty play of the Niners. On behalf of the fans I respond: NO F$%&ING S#!T! Maybe this weeks game will be competitive enough to watch.

Why is northeast ohio blacked out?

Jim Rome: If you don’t want a team to run up the score on you, then “just stop them.” You should “play the whole 60 minutes” like the Pats do. Be a man.

I thought it was called “running up the score” once a team has proven an opponent cannot stop you. Being a “man” means showing some class and allowing an opponent some dignity in the face of defeat.

Maybe it’s just me but I find these game all pretty tough to pick:

SF @ ATL
GB @ KC
CIN @ BUF
JAC @ NO
SEA & CLE
HOU @ OAK
NE @ IND

7 tough calls in one week is a bit unusual.

Well, I agree, but I was trying not to give offense.

We can get away with calling them the Cowgirls here with the offenderandi {sp?}showing up?

The mastodons sound good to, of course I don’t wish any specific harm on any of the Cowgirls or Iggles.

Jim

I loved doing the picks, but they are incredibly time consuming especially since I tend to get a bit wordy and ramble. I used to spend about 20 minutes on each game reviewing the matchups, injury news, and statistical analysis and that adds up. I could half ass it and throw up some WAGs but that takes most of the fun out of it. Last year I was picking games at an outstanding rate both straight up and against the spread. This year I’m near the bottom of all the Yahoo pick 'em leagues. Needless to say all that thought paid off.

With big markets like Chicago, Miami and New York on bye weeks plus geographically close St Louis, it seems like this Pats-Colts game is shaping up to be a potential ratings record breaker. There’s going to be about as little distraction as possible for a non-Prime Time game.

5-3 Browns. WHO WANTS SOME?

The Browns were on FOX. I think there’s a rule against showing a game on the opposite network while there is a game being played in a team’s immediate market. Maybe that’s just for home games. In any case, Cleveland didn’t get to see the Colts game. Sucks. I’m sure those who really cared either went to a sports bar or to a friend’s house with Sunday Ticket.

Well, THAT was an awesome 3 1/2 hours of football. I picked up a cable splitter and some coax this weekend and set up two TVs in my living room. Had the Browns’ thrilling victory on FOX and the Indy-New England hypefest on CBS. At least it lived up to the hype. The Colts made some incredible plays (that bobbly INT and Addai’s long reception), but they still couldn’t hold off the Patriots. At least they made them look mortal. I wish I could say more, but I really wasn’t paying close attention to most of the game. My eyes were on the FOX TV set most of the time.

Despite Braylon’s and Phil Dawson’s best efforts to fuck us over today, DA still pulled us through it. What was up with Romeo playing prevent at the beginning of overtime? That nearly cost us. Then, for the second straight week, our defense makes a stop on fourth and inches to win the game. Well, it wasn’t quite over then, but when we got the ball back, I felt pretty confident.*

From the little bit that I got to see today, the Lions look very confident out there. Granted, Cutler went down early, but their D has been tough in the last couple of weeks. I hope they can make a dent in the NFC playoffs.

*This paragraph directed at SenorBeef and any other Browns fans, as I’m sure not much of the rest of the nation tuned to FOX’s game this afternoon.

This happens every single game.

The reason actually is that the NFL is inventing yet another offense-friendly rule to up the scoring - no defensive players will be allowed within 5 yards of the intended receiver of a pass until they’ve caught it. They’ve chosen the Browns to be their test team this year to study the effects of the potential rule change.

At least that’s the most likely explanation, since no defensive Browns players are ever anywhere near a receiver when the ball is being caught.

Yeah, that pretty much summed it up for me. I mean, after watching the Cowboys-Patriots game, you could pretty much predict the outcome of a Cowboys-Patriots Super Bowl. The 'boys got stomped by a better team, and if they play again at the end of the season, they’ll get stomped again. But today’s game really could have gone either way, with some different breaks. And an AFC championship between the Colts & Pats, even in New England, could clearly go either way.

Although if you make me bet, I’ll take Brady & the Patriots. Damn, but they’re good.

I have a complex viewing experience tomorrow.

First, I hate the illegitimate entity from the STD-capital of the country. I’d normally want them to lose under any circumstances.

However, having them beat Pittsburgh gives a 3 way tie for the AFCN, so that’s the best situation for the Browns. So I should want Pittsburgh to lose, even if it means that the illegitimate entity wins.

However! If either Santonio Holmes scores 14.56 fantasy points or the Pittsburgh defense scores 13.7 points, I win $250. If Santonio scores 19.76 or the Pittsburgh defense scores 18.9 points, I win $500.

Obviously it’s quite unlikely to have Baltimore win with the Pittsburgh defense scoring big, but it’s possible that Pittsburgh loses after Santonio has a great day. McAlister and Rolle are out, and whoever’s behind Rolle in the depth chart must suck, so it could very well be a big day for Santonio.

I don’t think I’ve ever had such a conflicted viewing experience for an nfl game.

Somebody loses tomorrow, isn’t that enough to make you happy? I’m really resting my hopes on a WC spot, rather than winning the North: even if the Ratbirds do win tomorrow, we’re still behind Pittsburgh in tiebreakers unless we can manage to beat them, in Pittsburgh, next week.
If Baltimore loses tomorrow, with Indy and the Pats still on their schedule, they’re pretty much sunk for a hope for the WC spot.

If Pittsburgh loses tomorrow, we’d be fighting for the AFC North next week. If they win, we’d just be fighting to almost-tie it (they’d be 3-0 in the division with us 2-1 IIRC). I’m not conceding the north yet, and a WC isn’t going to be easy in the AFC this year.

I definitely don’t root for injuries, but I hope tomorrow is a brutal slugfest that beats the crap out of them in an injury free way.

Also, Santonio Holmes for 150/2 please.

David Carr is officially a bust, and is now eligible to make all those worst draft picks of all time lists. He was given the benefit of the doubt playing for an expansion team, but he has no excuse for piss poor play with Carolina. Two weeks ago the coach thought they had a better chance of winning with a 43 year old journeyman QB who had been on the team less than a week than him.

Also now officially one of the biggest busts of all time- Robert “Ole” Gallery. I think he’s even worse than Tony Mandarich. The fact that the Raiders still play this guy who can’t block anybody either shows they’re stubborn, or have no one else who can do a better job, which is hard to fathom.

And if Oakland had drafted Vince Young, everybody would be calling him a bust as well, but since he’s on a team with one of the best defenses and running games in the league, he looks good to those not in the know. To those in the know, he’s regressing, and the only reason he had success last year is due to teams not being familiar with how to stop the few talents he has. His stats are atrocious- last year when Grossman was playing similarly with a good defense carrying him, the media was calling for his head- why they aren’t with Young, I’ll never know. The Titans could be legitimate contenders with a decent QB, with him its one and out in the playoffs at best.

All Young is doing is not crashing the Ferrari, but he’s coming close. When Trent Dilfer and Brad Johnson and Grossman and many others did similar, no one was calling them great- why so for Young? And you don’t pay a guy that kind of money to not make mistakes- think of where the Titans would be with Tony Romo for example. His claim to fame, many comebacks last year, were due to the prevent defenses they played against him, allowing his only skill, running, to shine. He’s statiscally the worst passer in the league, and apprears to be getting worse. Take away the defense and the running game, and the team is 2-6 and they’d be calling for his head. Lucky him. He’s not even in the Top 30 in passer rating.

And Kurt Warner is incapable of being a decent starting QB- let him play when youre down 21, or run the two minute drill, but tell him its his team and he hasn’t been able to string two good games together since he was with the Rams.

Skip Bayless this morning on 1st and 10 said, after picking apart the Steeler’s schedule, that the Browns were the best team in the AFC North. I’ve always thought he was a blithering cockface before. Now, I am impressed with the man’s cunning and insight.

I’ll drink to a slugfest. And, yeah… the Ravens to win.

Ech. I feel dirty having typed that. I need to go take a shower.
