NFL Week 9

Just tooting my own horn here. Pittsburgh did indeed win versus Indy today.

And Taylor had his worst day of the year. 14 carries, 45 yards, no TDs. 2 receptions, 12 yards, no TDs.

Kudos to the Steelers defense.

Cam Little just set a new record for NFL field goals at 68 yards and it would’ve been good from 5 more

Yeah, 70 by somebody won’t be too long in coming.

Likely so. Hell, between this season (to date) and last season, there have already been nine successful field goals of 61+ yards. There have now been six field goals longer than Tom Dempsey’s 63-yarder (and he held the record for over 40 years); four of those six happened in 2024 or 2025.

There’s a similar explosion going on in punting. Not all that long ago, a punter who had a gross average of 45 yards per punt was pretty good, and a guy who would average around 48 yards was probably All-Pro; Shane Lechler (played from 2000-2017) was a nine-time All Pro, and averaged 47.6 yards per punt for his career. This season, there are six guys who are averaging 50+ yards per punt; the league’s worst punters are still averaging 44 yards.

The crazy thing is that the side view indicates that it never got more than 30’ above the ground.

I’d love to see the details of whatever faustian bargain the 49ers made, and with what trickster demigod they made the deal.

They won again today, but 1st Round rookie DE Mykel Williams is likely lost for the season with a feared ACL tear.

On a long field goal, the kicker tries for a shallower launch angle, trading height (and giving up a higher risk of a blocked kick) in exchange for that distance. Conversely, on a short kick, he’ll be trying for a steep launch angle, to avoid a block. It’s somewhat analogous to the difference between hitting a golf ball with a 3-iron, versus with a pitching wedge.

Yeah; the max carry is likely at a shallower angle. In baseball the optimal angle is around 30 degrees not the 45 in a vacuum, but the damned thing just kept boring through the air. I’m not sure what the optimal angle is with a football…

Doink!

Meanhoo more game theory in the Bills/Chiefs: punt it to the KC 10, or kick the FG to ice it for good, but risking leaving it at the KC 42?

The latter as the FG hits the right upright…

They win anyway.

Punting was the correct play, IMO. KC had two chances at Hail Marys late. If they get the ball inside their own 20, they probably get no chances.

There were 22 seconds left and KC had no timeouts, so yes, punting would have been the better choice.

But the Bills won anyway.

I was watching replays of the Packers/Panthers game when my wife asked “why is only one team playing in the mud?”

31-7 at the half in Washington.

I don’t want to jinx it but I think Seattle has a good chance in this game.

They played as close to a perfect half as possible. Darnold is 16-16 for 282 yards and 4 TDs. They held Washington to 140 yards offense and forced two turnovers.

Meanwhile JSN had 130 yards receiving on his own.

In the “just when you think it can’t get worse “ category, Jayden Daniels suffers apparent arm injury.

That young man’s season is done. I hope he comes all the way back, but those kinds of injuries often have neurologic and vascular consequences.

Daniels’ arm was twisted in the process and was turned improperly as he was on the ground after the play was blown dead.

“Turned improperly” is not something you want to hear with a human body part. Speculation is a dislocated elbow.
