NFL Yardage Pool Competition 2010

290 + 107 + 89 = 486

Makes me wonder how similar our picking criteria are. Turner wasn’t too hard to come up with, but I had to cross-reference a few things and rule out several ostensibly better WRs before I settled on Williams.

At this point in the season nothing too complex. I start with a list of defenses in the order they’ve given up yards to QB/RB/WR, rule out people I’ve already started, take a glance at future schedules to see if there’s a much better opportunity to use that player later, and give a little boost to recent production, and figuring out anything specific about the matchup that would produce the right yardage.

Williams was playing against the #6 WR yardage defense (IIRC). He’d averaged like 80 rec yards over the last 4 games. I suspected Atlanta would be able to run over TB and they’d be playing from behind. Atlanta is pretty good at stopping power runners like Blount so they’d need to throw.

I actually usually narrow it down to a list of 2-3 candidates before picking the final one. You should see my list of second-best candidates - they’re probably averaging 350/110/80 yards.

Yeah, not too different from what I do, though I’m factoring in DVOA (Atlanta has the 2nd worst DVOA against opposing #1 WRs, for instance).

Ah, I didn’t even think of searching FO for the relevant stats.

Damn!

Spreadsheet updated..

Week 9 scores

  1. VarlosZ 341
  2. SenorBeef 291
  3. Omniscient 262
  4. RNATB 255

So I just noticed that the totals on the bottom of the spreadsheet haven’t been updating since week 7. I had an error with the spreadsheet and copied and pasted the data to a new one - and apparently it just copied the numbers, not the underlying formula to calculate those numbers.

That puts the total scores up through week 9 (adjusted but no scores dropped yet) at:

  1. SenorBeef 2713
  2. VarlosZ 2460
  3. Omniscient 2384
  4. RNATB 2353

QB: [del]Peyton Manning, Philip Rivers, Tony Romo, Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, Philip Rivers, Kyle Orton, Matt Schaub, Eli Manning[/del]
RB: [del]Chris Johnson, Steven Jackson, Adrian Peterson, Ronnie Brown, Maurice Jones-Drew, LaDanian Tomlinson, Frank Gore, Darren McFadden, Michael Turner[/del]
WR: [del]Randy Moss, Reggie Wayne, Miles Austin, Brandon Marshall, DeSean Jackson, Percy Harvin, Anquan Boldin, Santana Moss, Mike Williams[/del]

Ben Roethlisberger
Arian Foster
Hakeem Nicks

I need to start making my picks earlier in the week so it doesn’t look like I’m just copying Varlos…

Week 9 Totals:

266 + 49 + 80 = 395

Week 10:

Used:
Chad Henne, Philip Rivers, Tony Romo, Matt Hasselbeck, Kyle Orton, Donovan McNabb, Kevin Kolb, Jon Kitna, Joe Flacco
Frank Gore, Maurice Jones-Drew, Adrian Peterson, Rashard Mendenhall, Steven Jackson, Chris Johnson, Ray Rice, Cedric Benson, Matt Forte
Steve Smith (CAR), Mark Clayton, Marques Colston, Brandon Marshall, Dez Bryant, Percy Harvin, Mike Wallace, Calvin Johnson, Greg Jennings

David Garrard
Thomas Jones
Mike Sims-Walker

Damn it. I’ve come to pretty much the same conclusions as Varlos but it would be lame if I ended up coming with the same set of picks, especially after we shared 2 last week.

But my best qb options are Vick (rather save him for Houston later), Orton maybe but I’d rather use him against a friendly pass D than KC. Shaun Hill gets to play Dallas next week and he’ll be a little healthier…

And Nicks is going to be the clear #1 guy against a broken Dallas secondary with Steve Smith out. Perfect situation there.

I’ve already used Foster so at least I can’t copy that.

Roethlisberger
Ahmad Bradshaw
Hakeem Nicks.

I’ll try to get my picks in earlier so that Varlos is the guy copying me.

[del]peyton manning, ronnie brown, chad ochocinco, drew brees, brandon jackson, santana moss, tony romo, frank gore, mike sims-walker, aaron rodgers, cedric benson, brandon marshall, eli manning, mjd, steve smith 2.0, matt schaub, matt forte, anquan boldin, josh freeman, steven jackson, mike williams (tam), ben roethlisberger, ryan torain, reggie wayne, jay cutler, adrian peterson, greg jennings[/del]
David Garrard
LeGarrette Blount
Andre Johnson

Heh, Bradshaw almost made it onto my list for this week, as well (probably 3rd behind Jamaal Charles). . .

Blount was my second pick so he’s headed for 180.

He had 76 on one drive.

…and only 15 for the entire rest of the game. Still, pretty good day for me:

David Garrard 342
LeGarrette Blount 91
Andre Johnson 146

579 (408 adj.)

I am just terrible at this this season.

342 + 3 + 26 = 371

Well, Varlos, the vast amount of garbage time saved us from a horrible Roethlisberger total. He had something like 130 yards when I looked in the middle of the third quarter.

Roethlisberger 387
Bradshaw 73
Nicks 82

542 (348.5)

Yeah, that wasn’t lost on me while watching the game. Every time he threw a little dump off that went for 15 yards, I smiled inside.
Roethlisberger 387
Foster 56
Nicks 82

= 525 (331.5)
