NHL April 2018 & post-season

Close… But it’s even better in Russenglish:

Sorry Rysto. I see you actually typed NEXT year.
My mistake.

The longer the police investigation goes on in Ottawa the more of a cloud hangs over the franchise, especially with any upcoming off-season activity. Quite something that this goes back to November. Not sure how much toxicity that would create in the dressingroom, but manoman - quite shitty.

Heh - I still think of Karlsson’s miraculous alley-oop pass right on to Hofffan’s stick at the opposite blue-line for that snazzy breakaway goal.

Curious if anyone other than Ovi has hoisted the Cup in the last, oh, 144-odd hours.

I guess the Cup’s making the rounds with individual players now - maybe Ovi stays with the Cup (with sole hoisting duties) no matter who the player is, even Backstrom.

Nathan Walker’s great aunt in Cardiff: “And who is this, Natey?”
Nathan Walker: “That’s Alex, Aunty. He’s staying with us for a few days.”

Got my photo with the cup and Barry Trotz steps down. I’ll return the photo.

There was talk near the end of the season that even with a Cup win, Trotz could quite likely still walk.

I wonder if money would still have been an issue with Trotz if Ovi had been eight, even five years younger.

Well, Barry, we hardly knew ye…

Trotz deserves a much bigger contract than Washington is offering him.
End of story.

The Senators traded Mike Hoffman to San Jose who immediately sent him to Florida. Florida gets a scoring winger cheap, but he comes with a lot of potential headaches as well. Or maybe he broke up with his fiancee?

We knew either Hoffman or Karlsson would be traded.

Heck, Karlsson may also still be traded.

I don’t know; while the team should have held up their end better, Trotz is not blameless. While he probably does deserve more than the Caps were offering, the fact is the bounces just went their way this year, and I don’t really think you can give Trotz credit for that. This was a lesser team than the past two that destroyed everyone in the regular season, easily winning the President’s Trophy back-to-back, then losing to the Pens in the second round each time. He’s got to own that, too.

Aye; scuttlebutt places him Las Vegas by Saturday.

ETA: I think Trotz deserved a good offer after sticking it out and finally bringing the Cup home as coach, but if he wants to rest on his laurels, I think that’s fine too. Most people seem to need other people to set a goal for them, maybe Mr. Trotz is realizing he doesn’t need that after all.

Barry Trotz has a son with Down’s syndrome. I think he’s trying to maximize his income to set his son up for life. He’ll probably take another job somewhere.

Wow, did the Sens ever throw Hoffman under the bus.

I thought about my nitpicking this, because it’s irrelevant to the discussion, but this is The Dope after all. It’s “Down Syndrome.”

Apologies for the nitpick.

Did they have a choice? No.

Did they have a choice to trade him? I agree, they did not have a choice. He had to go, but did the Sens have to say?

Ouch. You’re right.

Maybe Florida will indecorously taxi Hoffman off to Las Vegas.

Forgot: here’s Hoffman’s farewell tweet to San Jose:

It is risky to try to guess at motivations but I’ll do it. Some of the reporting suggests that Trotz was not happy coaching with an expiring contract. He wanted a longer contract than the Caps were willing to give. Money per year was not the ultimate obstacle.
