NHL April 2018 & post-season

Aye.

I wanted to be sure and say thanks to everyone who participated in this season’s hockey threads: thanks!

The Dope rocks in many ways; having fellow hockey fans like y’all to share news and commiserate with and stuff is yet another way. And sharing this amazing season, the NHL’s 100th season of play, was fantastic! Looking forward to 101!

Go Knights go!

Training camps in three months!

Agreed Bo. It’s nice to hear from fans of many other teams. And we are all able to do it respectfully: kinda like grownups!

I hope dale42 pops in here at some point to see this post.

What do y’all think of the monthly format? Do you think it helps to keep the thread length short for readability (or just to be less intimidating)? Or is it not anything that matters?

I’m just wondering if for next season we want to continue that way or just have a single NHL 101 season thread?

I’m undecided, and it’s my own question. I think the shorter thread lengths IS less intimidating and I think it can be easier to find things from earlier in the thread or season because it’s organized monthly. BUT I hate waiting for someone else to start the thread or having to start a thread myself every month, especially when something has happened that I wanna talk about. And it kind of puts the kibosh on replies to the last few posts in a given month, effectively curtailing on-going conversations.

Thought I’d ask before we get there and see what y’all thought; I know some people just really hate the whole “omnibus thread” thing.

I strongly support the monthly format during the regular season and I hope we keep that for next season. I’m fine with an omnibus playoff thread, if it gets too long, then a new one can easily be started.

What is it that you like about the monthly format, dale?

I almost always access the Dope from my phone or iPad. Shorter threads are easier to read on mobile. Also, on a monthly thread, I don’t feel like I’m monopolizing it if I’ve got a few days off and watch a lot of hockey. Plus, a shorter monthly thread can encourage newcomers, I’m fine if a newcomer joins in after seeing his/her first NHL game and wants to ask us what is hooking.

I think there’s enough traffic on the Dope to justify monthly NHL threads.

I prefer the monthly threads. If some kind of “event” occurs during the season it can derail the thread and run on for pages. Nice to start anew each month.

In terms of the season, there is not much difference in Nov 30 and Dec 1. Regular season threads this year varied from 14 to 44 posts (I might have missed one). A few years back I started with a first half of the season thread. It didn’t exceed one page. But I see the advantage of not getting multiple page threads. To balance that and considering prior traffic, a first half, Jan-Feb, Mar-Apr then multiple playoff round threads would be my vote.

Local post-game coverage asserted that Jay Beagle was the first player to win a championship in the ECHL, AHL and NHL.

In retrospect it almost has to be an undrafted player who had to work his way up. Top prospects won’t play in the ECHL and sometimes not in the AHL.

I’m seeing the wisdom of non-omnibus threads, but I do think monthly is too many of them.

I’m thinking like tim-n-va; what if we did this:

NHL 101 2018 (to cover October-December)
NHL 101 2019 (to cover January-March)
NHL 101 Post-season (to cover April and beyond)

If everyone just prefers the monthly threads and sees no advantage to this, I’ll drop it. It’s not a crusade or anything, I just thought it might be easier.

This won’t help in the slightest when I say I’ll roll with anything as long as there isn’t too much talk about Alexei Yashin or Harold Ballard.
Or Cooperalls.

So I guess this means Guin will have to decide this.:D:p:)

That’s really cool news - that kind of success story.

Upcoming trading block should make for an interesting off-season. A good percentage of high-profile players there.

As a StH, this morning I had my 30-seconds with the Cup. Picture with my wife and oldest son!

Whoa!

“OTTAWA - The wife of Ottawa Senators captain has filed an order of protection against the fiancée of one of Karlsson’s teammates, alleging harassment and cyberbullying.”

Leaffan, that’s terrible to hear.

Well I came in here to post that I think Ovi also wins the “NHL 100 Quote of the Year” contest:

Let’s go to the quarry and throw stuff down there!

Great job, Ovi & teammates! Enjoy your time with the Cup!

So, for those keeping score at home, the Sens’ owner is a penny-pinching jackass, the team’s assistant general manager has been charged with sexually harassing a 20-something male shuttle-bus driver, the team doesn’t have a first-round pick next season after finishing 30th out of 31 teams this year, they’re about to trade the best defenseman on the planet for pennies on the dollar and now Hoffman is radioactive.

My capacity for caring about this team, or hockey in general, is approaching a nadir.

We’re very accepting of refugees from other teams here in Las Vegas, Rysto!

Say it with me now: “go Knights go!” :stuck_out_tongue:

Ottawa has two first round picks this year.

Meanwhile, there’s actually still a little hockey to be played. The AHL’s Calder Cup Final between the Toronto Marlies and Texas Stars has been pushed out to a deciding Game 7 tomorrow night. It’s been a good tight series, lots of good action with packed & raucous arenas all the way through. It’s live on NHL Network tomorrow evening at 6:00 PM Central if you need one more fix of hockey before October.
