For the 1? 2? 0? fans here, my deadbeat Canucks and Flyers are looking to have fine, exemplary seasons, sans the fucking play-offs, once again.
Even though he’s a healthy scratch against the Sens tonight, Brock Boeser is looking to be a very promising young talent for the Canucks. Sure, he had an excellent pre-season (along with Oilers’ youngster Kailer Yamamoto), but what’s promising to me is that he has amazing hands, able to score from 40 feet, and he’s like a Dorsett - plenty of piss and vinegar, which I’m always ok with. There’s already talk about him being a major Calder candidate. Remember that name.
Other than that, I’ll have no problem if :)new coach Travis Green:) moves the Sedins to the third line, with Horvat leading the first line, and Sutter/Granlund/Dorsett the second, considering the Sedins are older and much slower and less aggressive (ha! like they ever were!) than they used to be, despite their still superior skills. I foresee one of the few bright spots being Markstrom, between the pipes.
Despite my motley Flyers are looking to have another season that I would call ass (missed play-offs in 3 of 5 last years, never getting past the first round) I hope Claude Giroux has made a full recovery from last season’s hip surgery. Elliot/Neuvurth should make a interesting tandem - I can’t imagine either one being back-up to the other. Wow I hope they never get rid of Gostispierre, and Gudas, meanwhile, has to watch it with the chippiness.
If I had to pick one player I’d least wanna be, that would be, without question, Montreal’s Jonathan Druin. The Habs media and fans are pinning their hopes way too much on the 22 year-old, who has a grand total of 23 career goals under his belt. The pressure, in that kind of extremely intense hockey environment (basically hockey’s Mecca), would be head-exploding, especially if he doesn’t perform.
And if Price gets injured…
Sure are TONS more slashing penalties called in this young season, resulting in more power-plays, leading to more goals so far (a good thing), but there’s more game delays with players skating to the box and waiting for the next puck drop, which definitely adds up if there’s sometimes eight or nine slashing penalties called in the same period, which is getting slightly goofy. I’d rather just see more five-on-five, myself. And, like the “obstruction” calls from many years back when players dump the puck in and try to skate around the defense, these slashing calls should most likely ease off over the coming weeks, as refs get tired of making these calls, as well taking guff for making them.
I’ll be watching the Leafs more closely, even closer than last season. To think they have a prospect as solid as Connor Brown on their fourth line - jeez - that’s some depth, and with the best coach in hockey backing them. I would’ve had no problem if Babcock had made the pride of Estonia - Leo Komerov - their captain - by far my favourite Leaf, but I’m also ok that they’ve gone captainless this season. (like they’ve been saying - Babcock’s the captain). Their defense is still a bit meh - Reilly is good, and Gardner (with his amazing speed) appears to be becoming less and less of a liability in his own zone (coughin’-it-up city, I observed, too many times).
Hoping all the insane young talent on the Jets (Patrik Laine, Mark Scheifele, and Kyle Connor) take off even more crazily this season.
I wish Bryzgalov was still playing (yeah I know it’s been several years) - I really, really miss his post-games.
