NHL Oct. 2017

Cool. Just make sure to keep this away from Snoboarder Bo and Guinistasia!

:smack::smack::smack: Wow - leaving the stupendous Nikloaj Ehlers out of that list is maybe the most embarrassing mistake I’ve made here the dope.

Finally got around to seeing the majority of a game with my universally-adored Canucks, and realise that it’s going to be another one of those seasons again. After having the second-longest ever NHL sell-out streak (474 games, from '02 to '14), it was strange seeing all those empty seats, and I gotta admit I didn’t make a point of catching every single game last season.:o

Blowing a whole bunch of 5-on-3’s, porous defense (I’ll be expecting relatively big things from Hutton and Stecher this season - both very capable, tremendable, even! youngsters), and an offense that I can sum up by saying that their grand total goals scored this season (8) is one less than Ovie’s (9), all tells me that coach Green might be a beleaguered one this season.

And captain Henrik getting - what? - three minors all in the third period?

They were playing Calgary, and so watched Jagr keenly and saw that he still needs to get back in shape. Kinda understandable, with him having only a week, so far, to get back in shape again, and also the minor issue of him being the third-oldest NHL’er ever, at 45.

He also likes cats too, which is ok with me.

Marc-Andre Fleury has been placed on IR by the Vegas Golden Knights, supposedly with concussion symptoms. I"m quite eager to see Malcom Subban, and not just for fantasy purposes. Still, this sucks for Vegas, they’ve been a pleasant surprise so far.

One of many reasons why Connor McDavid can do no wrong.
(scroll down just a wee)

The Knights are now 6-1-0 with 12 points and perfect in 3 overtimes. That’s a solid start for any team; for an expansion team it’s a helluva beginning.

I miss Flower. :frowning: (Yes, I know we couldn’t afford to keep him. But surely they can get Murray a decent back up!)

I can’t seem to locate a better start for an expansion team (hmmm might not be those newbies we all know and love - the '74-'75 Capitals, who went 8 W, 67 L, 5 T for a whopping 21 points in 80 games.:p)
I’d like to see an expansion team, for a change, establish themselves as legitimate contenders from their inaugural season, onward, but the odds are formidable, and I obviously wouldn’t put money on the Knights continuing at their current torrid pace. Fleury seems quite happy there, and if he stays healthy and confidence is high, and James Neal can fire up the team (a bit on his shoulders, here) then I look forward to their season.

A little dicey with Fleury indefinitely sidelined with the scariest of injuries - concussion, while Malcolm Subban is on the IR for about four weeks with a lower body injury, so let’s hope Oscar Dansk for the Chicago Wolves can keep the VGK afloat.

And in the meantime, pray Murray doesn’t get a major sidelining injury - Niemi has been a mystery since Dallas last season where he was puddly-goo and now as a Pen double-puddly-goo, not even worth the $750,000 for one year. Even the no. 3 - Tristan Jarry - has a .883 save pct. and 3.96 GA down in Wilkes Barre, so, one could call that “a position of interest” in Pittsburgh.
huh - goalie woes everywhere.

Good Lord but the Coyotes have to be one of the most pathetic professional sports franchises in North America. They’ve started their season with eight straight losses. Attendance is bad. They don’t know where they’re going to end up playing. Their release of Shane Doan was a PR fiasco. Move the damn team already.

My apologies to any Coyotes fans but we have fans in Canada drooling for a team.

Nothing about the Coyotes has made sense in at least a decade. The new arena was placed in an awful area for commuting during the week. Most of the more affluent population in the Phoenix area lives in the eastern portion of the cities and suburbs which are even further east. The drive across the entire valley is pure hell on a weekday. Yes, i know ‘real fans’ don’t bitch about the drive, but it took me an hour the one time I went to a weeknight game. Admittedly, the area immediately around the arena was an up and coming development, but it quickly became ground zero for the housing crisis with a massive amount of foreclosures and houses deep under water.

The Phoenix area is mainly transplants. The NBA Suns have gotten some loyalty, but they’ve also been there as the first pro team in the state and also the NBA has a younger fanbase. Of course, the Suns also play downtown. The Cardinals and D-backs still often feature a crowd of 50% of the fans rooting for the opposing team, and that’s with the Cards and D-backs having some recent success.

I"m not at all optimistic about Vegas either, but at least the hockey has been fun to watch, although losing two goalies in October isn’t going to help at all and I’m afraid the Golden Knights are going to crash back down to reality. NHL history is full of teams with a hot October that didn’t even sniff the playoffs.

Wow.

A 4-2 win over the Blackhawks, with a goalie who had only played about 9 minutes in the NHL before tonight. Who wasn’t even on our team, technically, until there were about 9 minutes left in the game with St. Louis the other night. And the win puts the team at 7-1-0, by far the best start ever for an expansion team in the NHL. Freaking amazing!

Well I don’t think we have to worry about that for the time being, since Niemi’s been claimed off waivers by Florida, and we just called up Casey DeSmith. Murray was in fine form tonight, and Kessel got the OT goal. Yay!!!

Patrick Marleau back in San Jose tonight. Nice to see him. Everyone in the arena was excited to see him. He was warmly welcomed.

Sharks played a good game tonight. Nice win.

The Knights are on their 5th goalie and we’re only 10 games into the season. At this rate, the team will have had 40 goalies by the end of the regular season.
