NHL: October 2021

Regular ESPN and MSG won’t be enough to watch every game. You would need to pony up for a subscription to ESPN+/Hulu. Looks like there are 6 ESPN+/Hulu Islanders games (4 home, 2 away) this season.

Man, that’s BS.

My God, after just 4 games, my Blackhawks are in last place in the entire conference. Our one “success” was an overtime loss that gave us a single “pity point”.

That was a BAD game, goaltending isn’t the only reason they lost but Fleury isn’t getting any younger and definitely didn’t help his team at all.

Somewhat surprisingly, the Sharks have a 2-0 record so far, including yesterday’s 5-0 demolishing of the Canadiens. There’s some hope in a team most people expected to be lousy.

In a way it is – Sorokin kept the Islanders in the game for the first couple of periods. That first period was a shooting gallery, even when the Isles were on the PP.

Funny comment on Youtube:

“The goal scoring race of the century continues. Connor McDavid has increased his lead over the Montreal Canadiens to 2 goals. And still has one less game played.”

Now it’s 4-0, with tonight’s win over the Maple Leafs.

Just came in here to say the same thing, I thought the Sharks would be awful and they’ve definitely come out of the gate on fire.

Speaking of fire, didn’t the Calgary Flames start off a season as the hottest team in hockey and then cool down after the first month and fail to make the playoffs?

Those gold Vegas helmets are an eyesore. I understand if the team likes them, but it is an unnatural colour for a hockey helmet.

A real fun matinee in Washington, ultimately ending in an OT loss for the Caps against the Flames.

Caps looked asleep and hungover in the first period giving up 3 goals and then roared back in the second period with three goals of their own.

It’s nice to see some of these matchups of teams that don’t play often, especially after the crazy schedule last season.

The Nashville Predators up 3-0 over the Wild in Minnesota wasn’t what I was expecting. But, that’s exactly how that Flames/Caps game started yesterday afternoon

What is it with NHL players and coaches referring to teammates by a shortened version of their last name with a “y” on the end?

For instance, Cole Sillinger is “Silly” and Oliver Bjorkstrand gets to be “Bjorky”.

I assume this semi-nauseating cuteness, which has been going on ever since I can remember, is not limited to the Blue Jackets.

The sexual assault report is out in Chicago and is claiming heads, at least early on.

Probably some Canadian thing. It’s not just the Blue Jackets, it’s all over the NHL – Barzy, Jordy, etc.

Ironically, one theory on the etymology of “hockey” is that it is derived from the Middle French word “hoquet”, referencing a shepherd’s hooked crook which is similar to a hockey stick. That makes the name of the sport itself something of a nickname with “y” at the end.

Okay, let me get this straight… a 20 year old player is raped by a coach…who threatens his career and physical health if he resists…he tells team officials…many of whom later deny this…who decide its an unnecessary distraction from their playoff run…the player’s teammates mock him for being raped…then he, for some weird reason, busts out of the league and is widely derided for it…while the rapist is given the chance to quietly resign…and recommended for a job at a high school where he’s later jailed for assaulting a player there too…but not before hoisting and getting his name on the Stanley Cup. And everyone, with varying degrees of happiness, went on with their lives completely ignoring all of this. Because hey, we won a championship. Who gives a fuck about anything else?

My jaw dropped just typing this out.

I think it’s pretty well established that “hockey” and “hook” are cognates.

I’m stunned Quenneville is behind the bench tonoght.

The Curse of the Metropolitan Division (for fans whose teams play in it): not a single team in the division currently has a losing record.

The other divisions all have at least four teams with losing records.
