How did he derail it? He asked if there was any research to answer the Ops question. The thread is full of new age movement nonsense. Like these:

You were way out of line in that post. And I really fail to see how advocating using the scientific method to test medical effectiveness qualifies as “threadshitting” or derailing the thread.
I don’t see any factual contributions by you to that thread. Your responses were entirely anecdotal.
Jonathan made the right call. If you thought Shodan was threadshitting you should have reported him, not junior modded him.
I don’t get your point. Threadshitting, if it happens, is different than accusing someone of threadshitting. Threadshitting is a judgment call, by a mod, whereas accusing someone of threadshitting is pretty much a black and white thing.
For that matter, there were a lot of other folks in that thread saying basically the same thing as Shodan was.
Which is pretty much the space I am in.
Shodan’s participation in the thread may be a bit blunt instrument, But he’s well within the line to ask for any scientific basis for any claims that are made regarding efficacy of different strains of weed. The OP asked if there are any differences in the varying strains of weed and Shodan replied that there’s little evidence and that claims without such are questionable. There’s nothing at all wrong with that on the SDMB. Hell, it’s almost orthodoxy.
You, on the other hand, took a shot at another poster. I chose to mildly redirect you rather than to escalate it. Nothing more.
Read the thread. It’s a good perfectly straightforward topic, and seems like a straightforward discussion. Nobody seems out of line whatsoever, certainly not Shodan – in fact I was looking for something I could label Shodan-esque, thinking that there was some tell tale, but found nothing that a million other posters wouldn’t have done or expressed. I don’t even see the reason behind JC’s characterization upthread of calling it a blunt instrument. The post consisting entirely of “cite?” is narrow as there is.
Also, OP, sarcasm is counterproductive in subject heds. I mean, I was looking forward to a shout out to JC, so I could rubberneck the happy parade.

Meh. I only clicked the link to see whether it was sarcastic or not. I gave it an 85% chance (of being sarcastic.) Something about calling him Jonathan just sounded like it would have to be sarcastic.
Also, BTW, I like the tone you took here, JC. I’d like to see more of that. Both in this thread and the other one.
I don’t particularly care for Shodan but frankly I largely agreed with his post and saw no reason to classify it as “threadshitting”. He made good points that the science is lacking in this area because of the fact that pot has been illegal for so long.
Also, Jonathan didn’t give you a warning but a mere mod note. Had he given you a warning I could understand being upset, but this strikes me as a bit of an overreaction.
Even if you were 100% correct (and you weren’t) where do you get off thinking that it’s OK to accuse someone of threadshitting? If you think that’s happening, you report the post. What part of that is difficult to understand?

Discussions in ATMB are expected to be civil. If you want to discuss Shodan’s participation in that thread and how it relates to the moderation that was done, that’s fine. However, if you just want to toss a personal insult at Shodan (or anyone else for that matter), that’s not acceptable here.
I had NO INTENTION of insulting anyone. Unless every character (popes, rabbis, presidents, etc.) who “walks into a bar” or “is in a crashing airplane with only two parachutes” is automatically considered a bad guy, I’m not sure how you interpreted this as an insult to Shodan.
