I have a very good friend who is also a Doper. I’m not going to name names, because he can do that if he wishes to be identified. I’ll call him Doperfriend
On Tuesday, Doperfriend gave one of the best gift I’ve ever seen, to a mutual friend of ours. Doperfriend donated a kidney. Doperfriend is now in the hospital recovering, and hopefully will be home today or tomorrow. The receipient is also doing well.
Wow. I’m generous, but I’ve never given anyone a kidney. I’m kind of attached to them.
Best wishes to Doperfriend and Mutual Friend for quick healing and healthy kidneys!
[hijack]This reminds me of the time I was in the hospital after surgery, all doped up, and the switchboard kept sending calls to me that were supposed to be going to the waiting room for the family of a brother and sister who were doing a kidney transplant. I don’t remember who was getting the kidney and who was giving one up, I was just annoyed that they kept calling me. And they never told me how the surgery went.[/hijack]
(But I don’t get the thread title, “No good Doper deed goes unpunished”. Seems like it would only apply if something bad happened to the donor as a direct result.)
My mother did the same thing a couple of weeks ago when she died. It feels strange to know that’s what happened to part of her, but it feels really good too to know that she helped out at least four people.
Doperfriend, you are truly brave and wonderful! I wish you a good and speedy recovery, and many happy times with MutualFriend!
And Edward, I’m so sorry for your loss. From the wife of a kidney transplant recipient, deepest thanks to your mother and your family for making that gift.
Agreed. I was waiting for the “… and then he died.” line, which is funny considering the OP said he can identify himself if he chooses to. Dead people can’t do that. So yeah, I’m glad you’re not dead, “Doperfriend”!
I interpreted that as even though the donor preferred anonymity, it was far too generous a gesture to go unrecognized and that desired anonymity would not be granted.
