No, I'm NOT watching the Super Bowl...

In this thread, we were discussing whether or not it would be really, really pathetic to go see The Wedding Date alone. Encouraged by my fellow romantic-comedy junkies to go ahead and risk the snickering of the ticket-taker, I went to check listings for Sunday, I found that Being Julia (which I could buy a single ticket for without donning a disguise) is also playing at a nearby multiplex.

Problem solved.

The Super what?

Well, you could bring me the chips and dip, and another beer…

::: prepares to duck :::

I’m spending 4-8 at work, and luckily, since everyone else in MA will be holed up inside, very few people will come to rent movies! woo

I enjoy football, but I made it a point one year not to watch. I just felt I had to.

I went to the movies. I went shopping in a department store. Turns out I missed a fairly exciting game, but that’s the way it goes.

This year I intend to clean out my closet while watching the game so I do something useful while the game is on.

I laughed out loud, but not for reasons you think. We tried that a few years ago when we were living in LA…just like you, figured NOBODY will be there during the game. HA…the place was jammed full! We barely got a parking space and it was the busiest I have ever seen.

Myth number two…we’ll go see a movie. NOBODY will be at the movie theaters, they will all be watching the game. Again, HA! Lines a mile long.

What is not a mythi is don’t even think about ordering a pizza for delivery…wait time can be hours and the one time I tried it, they told me they were booked solid for the entire day and could take no orders.

I only flip over to Superbowl for the commercials.

Not even doing that this year…boycotting them for being such pricks about Las Vegas. they refused to take and ads for Vegas (gee, like nobody else is going to bet on the games in Des Moines or Tulsa) and they actually have people going to the cosinos to make sure there are no big screen showings of the game.

Assuming not ever copy of Ray is rented at my local video store, we might try to get that and watch it on Sunday…then again, I bet we are not the only ones thinking that either.

Football is a deeper, richer version of rugby with many more layers of complexity. It is a cheap ripoff in the same way that chess is a cheap ripoff of checkers.

As far as looking for an activity that will avoid mobs of people, based on the idea that all the people will be watching the game, you have to consider which people will be watching the game. Do you really think that Ikea is normally packed with football fans? I’m guessing it’s not.

You’d be better off finding emptiness at an action movie. Or a paintball course. Or the powertool section of Sears.

Basically, Sunday offers you an excellent opportunity to get first crack at any activity that is otherwise typically dominated by football fans. If the activity isn’t dominated by football fans, then expect it to be just as crowded as normal. Probably moreso, considering the myth of the Superbowl ghost town.

I’m not watching it either, but I’m taping it on the off-chance that someone has some comment about a breakout AD that I wish I’d seen.
Of course, I’m thinking of the Apple ad smashing the IBM 1984 screen, which was not seen whole again for years.
The odds aren’t high, though. Last year a few were reported by columnists as worth seeing, and when I skipped down to them it was some dopey dog chasing a beer truck - like that’s new.

I may not be watching, I’m not a football fan, but will set my DVR for the halftime show just in case Florence Henderson has a wardrobe malfunction.

I’ll be doing laundry and packing for my trip to Houston. Dunno if my sweetie will watch the game - he’s hardly watched any football in years - not since Dallas had a team worth watching.

I’ll be watching. No one in my family is a really big football fan, but we always enjoy the Superbowl. We spend the day together chowing down on chili and chips and dip and whatever other junk I decide to cook up, and we make fun of the commercials. Last year’s game was awesome; unfortunately, the only thing anyone remembers about it is Janet Jackson’s booby.

I’m going skiing tomorrow- apparently, it’s much cheaper to ski on Superbowl Sunday.

Yay me!

Tucson Gem and Mineral Show for us. Who cares about football?

DD

Sooper Boll? Waht ees thees Sooper Boll?

But seriously, I never watch, and I have two little games I play connected to the Super Bowl. Before the game, I see how long I can go before (without trying, of course) I somehow learn which teams are playing. I think this year is was Tuesday.

Then, after the game, I see how long I can go without finding out who won.

I plan to connect my PS2 to the TV in the other room and play video games. I finally just got a working Disc 1 of Final Fantasy VII (the old one crapped out on me just after I passed the Fortress of the Condor), so I’ll probably play that.

Well I’m watchin’ it! So there! :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m not watching…I live outside Boston, and I’ve already had my fill. You cannot turn on the TV, without seeing “in depth” interviews with the Patriots players, coaches, assistant coaches, assistant to the assistant coaches, etc. Gaaahh!
FOX is so stupid-they have somepoor idiot standing outside the stadium in Jacksonville every day, doing nothing but mumbling//"reporting LIVE from Jacksonville…"blah blah blah!
Face it, the Superbowl is about advertising and partying…the football is actually secondary to he advertising (which dictates the breaks and play sequence).
What amazes me are the local Elks, Mooses, etc…they are all sponsoring parties, buffets, etc…everybody will be well lt up by the time the game starts, and many will be passed out by halftime.

twickster - Yo.

Never been able to watch a full game. One time I was watching the first half and I feel asleep. Wasn’t particularly surprised, either.

What with my new job and all kinds of personal projects, I’ve barely been able to keep up with the sport. (Lessee, the 49ers had an astonishingly bad year, the Steelers were on a tear, the Dolphins choked down the stretch, the Cardinals still rip out their fans hearts week after week…) I’m dimly aware that the Patriots are on the cusp of a dynasty and the Cowboys brass finally realize that Bill Parcells isn’t a freaking god, but other than that…eh. This is the first season in over a decade where I didn’t watch a single full episode of NFL Primetime. It’s like, so much that actually matters is going on; who has time to watch some game?

I’m kinda pulling for the Eagles here. There hasn’t been a whole lot to cheer, sportswise, in Philadelphia lately, and I can’t shake the feeling that the Patriots are just riding a mind-blowing lucky streak (and yeah, they were kinda due). But I’m all the way on the other side of the country, so I wouldn’t get too choked up either way.

Anyway, I’m going to do what I do every Sunday: take it easy. Maybe continue that fanfic that’s been on hiatus for a while, or play some of those PS2 games I got at that used 3-for-2 sale, probably take a walk too, whatever. I’ll be sure to catch the homestarrunner.com halftime special as well. I suggest you do the same. (But do see who wins. That at least shouldn’t be a problem.)

P.S.: I cannot freaking BELIEVE we haven’t heard the last of this “wardrobe malfunction” garbage yet. Fer chrissake, it was a breast! FOR LESS THAN A SECOND!! Mark my words, future generations will look back on this mindless hysteria and wonder just what the hell we were all smoking. Man. One year and counting…

nope, not watching, not interested. i have to spend the afternoon doing some programming for the department of homeland security, so when that is done, i will probably plug in a movie and snooze in the recliner.
