No Man's Sky - First star to the right, and straight on till morning

He has a new one with IGN that I found out about in this article, which draws a comparison with a certain other game.

And the recent negatives seem to be either “stop liking what I don’t like” or think it’s still 2016.

Got lucky with facility grinding last night and got blueprints for semiconductors and organic catalyst. I can now build Fusion Ignitors and Stasis Devices purely from raw materials (though supply depot raids are still helpful). Now working on a massive farm expansion, as well as gas harvesting. Ammonia seems to be in short supply, and the paraffinium synthesis is kinda inefficient and slow. I haven’t found a planet yet with minable ammonia–is that actually a thing, or does it only come from plants (or synthesis)?

It looks like you took the same route I did initially–crawling into the domes via ladder so as not to waste the farm slots. I’m fairly convinced now that it’s not worth it. Even with all four connectors used, you only waste 25% of a dome’s slots (16 down to 12). But that’s overkill; the domes on the edge only need a single entrance. I currently have 12 domes with 11 connectors, for a waste of (112)/(1216)=11.4% Avoiding the stupid ladders as much as possible is worth that 11%, especially since the domes are much cheaper than before (no living glass).

The doors don’t actually block you from putting something in there. You can put a plant in just fine and step around it, depending on size of the plant. The cactus will block the path entirely and Some of the others make it so you have to jet hop over the threshhold. I took to planting my gamma weed in the door slots of all the domes, since it is tiny and easy to walk over, but still harvests just fine.,and I simply have a have a full connected grid of domes.

If you put a door in the dome, and then delete it, it will take the planting slot away for good a lot of the time though.

Well, if you really want to cheat your way to victory…

I do actually try to avoid stuff like exploiting clipping bugs–actually, even the two slots to the left and right of the door are bad enough (they still clip through some geometry), but I can at least justify that as the plant being pushed slightly off from upright, not outright blocked by metal.

Considering I have had to tunnel into a trading post encased in solid rock to turn in a delivery, My threshold for clipping issues is way above a plant in a step.

Yeah, I’ve been considering scrapping the ladder-dome thing and doing something easier to navigate. Ladders in general are pretty irritating in NMS so I won’t be sad to ditch them altogether.

Is there a reason not to just building a giant greenhouse?

Mine is pretty straightforward as well. The domes just kinda hang out there, but they are pretty efficient. There’s some underground space as well. It’s kinda reddish most of the time, because it rains “corrupted blood”.

I see you found one of the cool looking upright ships. I just happened across one, but it only had 20 slots free compared to my current ship’s 38. So I declined, even though it looked cool.

Yeah, that one sits in the garage and gathers dust. I think it actually has the same slots as my current ship, but it would cost nanites that I don’t have to get it up to functionality as a primary ride. I just cashed out my entire stash upgrading a new max-slot multitool.

Do the expeditions eventually stop having the 90+% failure rates when they start accumulating levels at expedition skills? I’ve almost stopped sending them out because almost every freaking time “we had an…incident. We have to come home.” (Also, why do they need ME PERSONALLY to come fix their ship by tossing 5 platinum into a bucket or whatever?)

Or are my frigate captains just morons?

Disparity between the fleet rating and the expedition rating seems to be the key here. I’ve not seen anyone ask to return early when sending a five-star fleet on a two-star expedition. Two-star fleet on a two-star expedition? Cut short nearly every time.

You’re the one who has the stuff to fix it, or can easily get the stuff if you don’t.

Make sure you’re always at least one star higher than the challenge rating. I very rarely get damage that way, let alone aborted missions. \

Also, yes. They’re morons.

Yeah, C level frigates are crap. Even b level are miles better. Fortunately you only need a couple good ones to make the mission successful, and the C level can tag along for the experience, and they upgrade fairly quickly fortuanately.

Domes (and planters on your freighter, unless that’s been fixed) don’t have to constantly be recharged with carbon. Standard & 4-slot planters in your base, do.

Of course, you could build a micro-base in each climate & have open-air farming for cheap, too.

It’s interesting how people play this game differently. I’ve been playing for about a month, and not once have I considered building a base - construction holds no appeal to me - and I wouldn’t know how to send an expedition if I wanted to. In fact, I don’t think I’ve been to the same system twice, and I don’t plan too, either. I’m here purely for the exploration. Just me, my constantly-upgrading ships, and the galaxy.

I just spent all my money (131 million) on one of the massive freighters. It’s pretty rad how big the thing is, though less rad how I now have no money.

Then again, money isn’t worth all that much outside of big-ticket purchases like freighters.

For what it’s worth, if you don’t build a base at least enough to get all five (six?) specialists, it cuts off a bunch of quest trees, which give you most of the recipes and equipment necessary to make “ship upgrade” level money and obtain usable amounts of some of the rarer elements. These, in turn, are mostly used to improve bases and fleets, so if you’re not interested in those, it likely doesn’t matter.

Chloe Bryn - yes, that’s my ship sticking out of the round room. It would be nice if HG would fix teleporting so the ship goes on the pad.

Basic Beachfront Base

Well, that means you can’t do a lot of the quests. You will also miss out on a lot of the crafting. But if those things don’t interest you then that’s fine. Do you at least have a freighter? Those are good, and you can put some decent mods into them to do a lot of the things you can have on your base.

Myself, I have one main base, then I’ve built a number of bases that consist of a computer and a teleporter. It’s allowed me to basically remove all of the various special drives from my main exploration ship (you can use your freighter in any case to get to red, green and blue stars if you really want too) and just teleport there when I need the special ores (or to some other worlds for atmosphere capture so I have a steady supply of nitrogen, radon, chlorine and the like). I use a lot of this for crafting.

I also do a constant stream of expeditions with my frigates as it’s a good way to get cash and also sometimes rare elements for crafting. I do enjoy the exploration aspects, especially since I upgraded my multitool for max scanners. But I also like to do the space station and capital ship quests, as well as raid manufacture and operation centers for schematics for crafting. I’m nearly at the end game, as I’m starting to just think about getting better ships (still haven’t been to the core yet though).

I hope they put more into multiplayer in the future, especially multiplayer game play and quests. I also hope they actually build some cities at some point…it’s kind of weird going from planet to planet where you never really see a large group of aliens just living. I’d also like to see more done with defunct alien civilizations and ruins, or derelict space craft just floating in space…that could be pretty cool to explore or have instanced quests in. They need more for the end game…pirate fleets of capital ships, or alien races trying to take over an entire system, something to challenge late game users or groups.

I have to say that the game has gotten a LOT better than at release. I had given up on this one after a few hours of play initially, and I’m glad a friend of mine talked me into giving it another try.
