No More Big Macs for Iceland

McDonald’s plans to close its three Icelandic outlets at the end of the month after the krona’s collapse hurt profits at the sites, according to Bloomberg. One might regard that as an unexpected benefit of the world financial crisis if one were so inclined. :stuck_out_tongue: (I wouldn’t, as I like chowing down on a Big Mac and fries once or twice a month.)

Well, at least they still have Björk. Whether that’s consolation or further reason to be depressed remains to be answered.

So, they’re out of the Big Mac Index then. How are we supposed to know what an ISK is really worth? (If it’s still worth anything.)

Vincent: “Do you know what they call a Quarter Pounder in Iceland?”
Jules: “What?”
Vincent: “They don’t call it nothin’, they don’t have McDonalds there anymore.”

Björk is cute, weird, and musical. Definitely a win.

But I’m puzzled. The article states that McD’s competitors were buying locally, and McD’s had to import increasingly-expensive food, and was therefore losing its competitiveness. Couldn’t McD’s buy locally in Iceland? ISTR that that’s what they tend to do in new markets, even going as far as seting up completely-new supply chains.

Guess we could play Eve Online. Or make economists play it. It might be a way to get them off our hair: win-win!

Oh, please. How many servings do you think she’d make? 8? 10? Tomorrow, it’s just gonna be back in the same boat.

And she’s technologically curious. And somehow manages to make that weird.

You think they’d serve her straight? They could mix with breading and spices and get at least 20-30 out of her. Granted, you probably wouldn’t get through much more than half a lunch rush with that though, but surely they could hike the price for the privilege of consuming a home-grown celebrity – it’d make a hell of a promo stunt.

Ah, yes - Björk Helper.

So, what does an Icelandic McDonalds have that you can’t get elsewhere? I know that Hawaiian McDonalds serve sandwiches with spam. Iceland has to have something different to play to local tastes. Anyone know what that would be?

Reindeer Royale?
Puffin Pate?
Arctic Fox Happy Meal?

Bjork Burgers?

Sorry, couldn’t resist.

A Quarter Puffin with Cheese and the Big (Ram) Sack would be my guess.

I’m embarrassed for us both that neither of us came up with “Egg McPuffin.”

Do fast food joints in Iceland serve lamb burgers? I would imagine that ground lamb/mutton ouht to be pretty cheap in Iceland-could you get a mutton “Big Mac”?

Aw man. I was going to say a McPuffin but that sounded too general. I didn’t even think of the egg.

L’esprit de l’escalier strikes again.

Word. I didn’t even think of it until I read your post.

That’s, like, Treppen-and-then-halfway-down-the-block-witz.
