No Southland in the Springtime for me this year *sniff*

As I shuffled bleary-eyed into the living room this morning, I saw that we have 4 little daffodils already blooming in our yard. It was at that moment when the hurried and distracted denial of the past few months coalesced into a bittersweet moment of clarity…after 8 years, I fly off to my new job and new life in California next week, and I won’t be around to experience Georgia’s gorgeous gorge of spring.

No more “softer than a whisper” nights. No more sweet magnolia hanging in the air.

When Og made me born a Yankee, he was teasin’.
There’s no place like home and none more pleasin’
Than the Southland in the Springtime.

Well, Cookies, you might find a home you like here in the spring, too. Depends laregly where you’re goin’. May your move out here be the best thing you’ve ever done!

Stop yer’ whinin’. You’re moving from Georgia to California. I’m still up to my oh-so-frozen nipples with snow.

Yeah, what gives? I know leaving home sucks. But you’re not moving to Siberia.

This time of year, California is pretty much experiencing spring while here in New England the groundhog is still murmuring vague apologies for having gotten it wrong.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m originally from Northering California, and I’m deeply thrilled to be going back to my rugged Pacific and my redwoods and all of my outdoor adventure options, actual domestic partnership registration with the state, and endless other things.

But, Spring is succulently perfect in the south. It is the one thing I will deeply miss. Well, that and the fireflies.

Sorry about the hijack but ComeToTheDarkSideWeHaveCookies is possibly the best screename ever :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks, but I’m merely a thief.

It’s 72 here in Birmingham today, and I’ve been noticing jonquils and Japanese magnolias in bloom recently. You can feel Spring straining to explode out of the ground here already. God, I love the South in the Spring. DarkSide, good luck in California. Maybe you can stall for a couple weeks so you can catch some of the colors and smells.

They don’t have fireflies in California? What’s up with that?

StG

Nope, no fireflies in California. I grew up there, and the only time I’ve seen them was when we went to DC one summer. I was 14, my brother was 11, and we acted like 5-year-olds because we were so excited to see and “play with” those magical bugs.

I’d probably behave about the same way today.

(No fireflies on all of the West Coast, AFAIK. Certainly none in Seattle!)

I have never seen a firefly. Can’t really fathom it, in fact.
Oh wait. I’ve seen the fake ones in the Pirates of the Carribbean ride at Disneyland a million times since I was little. That counts, yeah?

No. It doesn’t. I’m deprived. There isn’t anything we have here that nobody else in the country has, do we? 'cept traffic. Really bad traffic.

Well, fuck. I’ve just talked myself out of wanting to live here! Thanks, CTTDSWHC!!
