Nobel Peace Prize Announced; It Doesn't Go to Trump

Wouldn’t it be easier if Trump just invaded Sweden, appoint himself head of the Nobel committee and award himself the damn prize?

And then he’d insist that the Nobel Committee relocate?

The man doesn’t know the difference between Sweden and Norway…and he really doesn’t give a shit.

I wonder if Melania will give him her Oscar.

I think you mean her Nobel Prize in Literature for Melania, a Memoir.

The committees that award the Nobel Prizes are in Sweden and in Norway.

Despite having been a head of state for five years at this point, Trump’s understanding of his job isn’t much deeper than “The president is in charge of the whole country and everybody has to do what he says”. Ergo, in his head, he assumes the PM of Norway can just order that he be given the Nobel and it will be so.

Norwegian parliamentarians are on the peace prize committee. So he sent the letter to the right country.

Trump is seeking a pretext for war. War pretexts are not logical. They say nothing about the dictator’s intelligence.

Another part of the pretext is insistence the U.S. buy Greenland. There isn’t any chance of congress appropriating money for that purpose. Trump saying Greenland be sold to a buyer who lacks ready money is another part of the pretext.

Ahem… you mean the Trump -Nobel Committee.

One thing that may spur Trump on even more:

Russia has been flattering him in their press about his handling of Greenland.

You know what would be the funniest thing in the world?

A Democrat is elected in 2028, and they immediately get to work fixing everything Trump screwed up in terms of international relations… and are awarded a Nobel Peace Prize for it.

I actually think there’s a very good chance of this happening, if anyone is still alive by then.

Though this time around wait until s/he actually does something that shows some results.

Well sure, but a POTUS that doesn’t actually bomb, invade, coerce, infringe, disrupt, violate and appease would be a change worth encouraging.

That’s too close to what they were thinking in ‘09.

And that’s what got Donald obsessed.

Well if s/he doesn’t seek to blow the rest of the world up, then the rest of the world should be at least entitled to hand out a kewpie doll in appreciation.

Obama got a peace prize very early in his term before he really had a chance to do anything simply for being Not Bush, so I think it’s pretty likely that a future Democrat will indeed get a peace prize for being Not Trump.

And to be fair, being Not Trump is a much bigger accomplishment than being Not Bush.

I don’t see any reason to think that their thinking has changed. The 2029 peace prize will almost certainly go to the Democrat elected president in 2028.

Edit: Never mind, Babale said everything I was going to say.

However, I think the Nobel committee is a bit leery of the optics of awarding a president a Nobel Prize just 3 weeks after taking office, as Obama got. No matter how awful Trump is and how good the 2028 Democrat is, I think they’ll wait at least a year this time.

I think Obama even admitted he hadn’t done much to deserve the award. (Remember that the deadline for nominations is at the end of January to receive the peace prize that year. So Obama’s nomination came within just a couple of weeks of his inauguration.)

Quite. Doing an Obama again would only reinforce the perception that they are politicking with the award.

There’s always been an element of politics to the award. But usually to a purpose. It’s not as though Yasser Arafat or Kissinger were exemplars of peace.

But after this last decade, it’s unlikely they’d do an Obama again. The W years might have been seen as an aberration with Obama representing a return of the US to the international fold. Clearly it wasn’t.

They didn’t give one to Joe Biden back in 2021, after all. Or even after 2022 or 2023. I doubt they’ll give one to a sitting US President anytime in the near future unless it was well and truly deserved. The idea they’d automatically give it to any Democrat who wins the 2028 election doesn’t make a lot of sense.
