Saving representative American democracy is the responsibility of American voters. Machado’s proper responsibility is her movement and country, and flattering Donald Trump serves that.
It’s kind of cute in a way. He’s so simple-minded, and such a sociopath, that the idea of an afterlife and being punished for doing bad things just occured to him recently, was believed uncritically, and before that he had no reason to be good*.
So he has decided that a nobel prize (and buying a turkey for tiny tim?) might blag him a place.
Probably it was some of the recent talk about a rapture. Nothing would irk him more than visually and indisputably being a member of the lesser group that are left behind.
\* He’s actually explicitly said that without heaven there is no reason to be good. Which should be a damning (so to speak) thing to say. But of course among many Christians it’s a common talking point. What other reason could there be to not eat babies than fear of God?
Like I said earlier he’s succeeded wildly in making it all about HIM in everyone’s heads beside his own. And it will now be all about him every year as long as he lives. Great.
So my take is this a misguided attempt by the prize committee to placate Trump. On the face of it he should be happy about this. They gave it to an opponent of the regime that is allegedly his main foreign opponent (who he’s actively trying to start a war with). However they massively underestimated his misogyny and overestimated his knowledge of the country and political regime whose citizens he’s currently ordering killed.
There is zero chance that he got the nuance that this woman might be Venezuelan but she’s an opponent of the socialist government of Venezuela
I think the Nobel Peace Prize committee doesn’t care about what Trump thinks. To them, he’s simply an incoherent person who makes many statements about national and international issues. Some leaders of foreign countries will occasionally claim to agree with Trump because they think that they or their country could benefit by agreeing with those statements. That doesn’t mean that they actually consider Trump to have any coherent ideas.
The symbolism of giving the nobel peace prize to someone who is trying to restore democracy in a world that is moving towards dictatorship is pretty symbolic.
I just did a bit of research to see how likely it is that Trump will win a Nobel in 2026, 2027, or 2028.
For him to have a chance, the committee has to mostly consist of politicians. That means Peace Prize only.
It is my strong impression that only two of the five current Peace Prize Committee members are in hailing distance of being what we in the U.S. call conservatives. So Trump needs at least one more vote on a committee whose members serve a six year term.
Three terms expire next year, including one and only one of the probable conservatives (Anne Enger, historically anti-abortion and anti-EU) Then there is no vacancy until 2029. So baring a committee member health disaster, whether Trump ever gets the Peace Prize comes down to what happens next year to those three seats.
Who appoints the Peace Prize Committee? Norway’s Parliament, the Storting.
Norway had elections last month. As seen in my last link, the bad news for opponents of illiberalism is that the Trumpy Progress Party surged. But they still only got 12 percent of the seats (24 percent of the vote, but percent of vote does not matter for now). The old time Conservative Party, the only other party that maybe has a soft spot for Trump, got 20 percent of the seats. As for the remaining 68 percent of the legislature – their leaders may be polite to Trump because of tariff fears, but IMHO they are not going appoint the kind of committee members who would vote for Trump in a secret ballot.
Unless there is something big I am missing (always a possibility), Trump lost that prize when the Norwegian right lost that election. But never say never. Could Norway have early elections?
Well the headline says
“Huh? GOP Congressman Tells Fox He’s Introducing Resolution to Award Trump the Nobel Peace Prize”
And the story says
“A GOP lawmaker told Fox Business on Friday that he’s working on a resolution to award Donald Trump a Nobel Peace Prize, since the Nobel committee failed to do so Friday morning.”
My bold.
So it won’t be THE prize, it will be A prize. Like those knock-off handbags you can buy out of the trunk of some guy’s car in the city. In fact, that’s probably exactly where they will get whatever doodad they give him.
