Nominees for the Most Loathsome Canadians of 2008

Another thread links to a wonderful list of the Most Loathsome Americans of 2008 It’s a great list.

I joked in thatthread that a list of the most loathsome Canadians of 2008 would just be a list of all federal politicians, but then I started writing some names down. So far I have:

  1. Stephen Harper
  2. Jack Layton
  3. Elizabeth May
  4. Stephane Dion
  5. Conrad Black
  6. J. P. Ricciardi
  7. Danny Williams
  8. Warren Kinsella
  9. Naomi Klein
  10. Arturo Elias (President of GM Canada)
  11. Bob Rae
  12. Jim Flaherty
  13. Sean Avery
  14. Mario Dumont
  15. John Tory
  16. Gord Downie
  17. Michael Ignatieff
  18. The My Five Kids from those goddamned commercials
  19. Sid Ryan
  20. Shawn Brant
  21. Mike Duffy
  22. Bob McCown

I invite more nominations. In the spirit of the 50 Loathsome Americans list, please nominate more names with the following in mind:

  1. We’re looking for a nonpartisan list.
  2. Public figures only.
  3. We want a nice mix of politicians, business leaders, entertainers, sports figures, and anyone who pisses you off.
  4. The list can include Canadians or people who are not Canadians but reside in Canada (which allows J.P. Ricciardi.)
  5. The list should be mindful to try to include people for their loathsomeness in 2008, though accumulated loathsomeness can figure in to thsoe 2008 accomplishments.
  6. I need some good nominations from outside Ontario, especially.
    Any ideas for more names?

Not Gretzky’s wife? Not Alan Eagleson? Not Rick Tocchet?

And, most mysteriously,
Not William Shatner?

Yoko Ono isn’t Canadian.

Mats Sundin and Ray Emery. Chris Simon(he got one of his monster suspensions in 2008, right?).

It’s a sad sign when I’m totally unfamiliar with nearly half of the OP’s names. Clearly, we need to cultivate a stronger Canadian media.

I can’t think of anything they did in 2008. I don’t even know if Alan Eagleson is alive.

Thanks for the nomination!

By the way, I think that it’s absolutely pathetic that the leaders of 4 of the 5 biggest national parties in Canada are the top four on the list, while Gilles Duceppe didn’t make the cut – and I can’t argue with the omission.

Lifetime Achievement Awards. They breathed.

He is. I checked first. His loathsomeness will last for generations after his passing, of course.

Price Line Negotiator! (fake karate chop)

Put Alex Trebek in there too, btw. Snotty little prick.

Jeez. Bitter, much?

I would omit some of your names and add others. Gordon Campbell springs to mind, although he’s not really loathsome, just sorta icky and dumb.

How about a committee? Like, it’s called VANOC: the 2010 Olympic Committee.

Pukes, all of them.

How sad is it that it took me reading the whole thread in confusion before I re-read the Subject line and realized it didn’t say “Nominees for the Most Loathsome Comedians of 2008”? I kept thinking 'I never heard of any of those guys" (except for my ‘wow, there’s a comedian named Naomi Klein too?’).

Now that I’m up to speed, what’d Naomi Klein do? And what thread lists the Most Loathsome people of 2008?

You could put Alan Thicke in there if you like - that would cover both. Or Mike Myers.

The 50 most loathsome people in America in 2008

Putting Alan Thicke in there would make everyone else on the list look like heroes.

Alan Thicke makes our historical embrace of eugenics programs and the systemic abuses at residential schools seem like something we can feel proud of.

Alan Thicke is our national shame.

[Kirk]* THIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIICKE!* [/Kirk]

Stephen Harper is some politician, right? I don’t recognize any of the others.

All I could add is Celine Dion, mainly because one of our lab people plays the same song by her over and over and over until one dreams of dropping a bunker-busting bomb on her speakers.

Charles Krauthammer.

He’s so full of visceral hate for anybody who doesn’t worship George Bush’s feces that his head is going to explode someday soon. The former psychiatrist has actually diagnosed doubters of his conduct of The War Against Terror as having “Bush Derangement Syndrome”.

Can we *please *deport him back?

Avril Levigne?

Ben Mulroney?

Thanks Rysto.

Ralph Klein.

Shouldn’t people be picking nominees that have, you know, done something in 2008?

For my part, I nominate Sean Avery.

Conrad Black is listed, but not Mark Steyn? His 2008 contributions are based on anti-Muslim bigotry in his columns and books, but his Clinton-hatred is almost as visceral as Krauthammer’s. As part of his concept of “journalism” including simple lying, he once invented the story about Hillary claiming to have been named after Sir Edmund. More recently, he is responsible for the lie about Obama having been educated at a radical Muslim madrassah in Indonesia, and attributed it to the Clinton campaign (getting both of his primary hatreds play at once). I’d still put him down the list from Krauthammer because he at least appears to be conscious of what he’s doing.
