Ill-advised though this thread may be, you have to laugh at citizens of a country that recently effected regime change in a foreign nation by force getting this shirty about a simple request to vote according to their original preference.
And I believe complaceny is a lot like larceny, but the perpetrator gets over-confident half way through and the cops arrive to find him sat in his pants, eating Doritos in front of the TV he meant to steal.
It’ll be interesting. Whomever is president in 2009 will have a huge plus (fantastically low expectations) and a huge minus (total fuckups needing to be cleaned up due to a 'tard in the 'house ahead of him).
That’s been going on for years. Iran seems like to most likely supplier for the simple reason that Reagan supplied the Shah with US Mint presses, tools and training.
Well, I guess after centuries of England being that nasty kid, someone needs to take their place.
You really think McCain has any chance in hell of winning? I think he was “forked” from the very moment he ran. A young, black, “handsome” man with a charismatic cult of personality that equals that of Josef Stalin, who radiates “CHANGE!” and “HOPE!” versus a stodgy, boring old man with white hair and wrinkles whose only plus is the fact that he withstood a year of torture as a prisoner of war.
Obama’s already got this one in the bag, no question.
Black doesn’t help Obama, dude. He’s running as a Democrat, he already was pretty much guaranteed to land 90% of the black vote anyways. The last two Democrats to win a Presidential election were good old boys who could stop ‘Yellow Dog’ Democrats from defecting to the R side in Presidential races.
Obama definitely does have a cult of personality going, but again, it’s just a more fervent following of much the same people who would have voted for any Democrat. I really wonder how many Obamacons like Andrew Sullivan there really are out there.
While one might assume that Obama’s CoP might increase voter turnout, do you really think it will increase it more than the massive anti-Bush sentiments in 2004? Or that it will counteract the increased turnout by people who might not have voted, other than to do their part to make sure a black guy doesn’t get into office?
Plus, while war-hero status doesn’t ring as important among younger voters, I’m of the opinion that it might be a critical factor to old folks. Old folks who (because they’re already on Medicare) won’t be swayed by Universal Health Care, or Obama’s youth. And remember, geezers always get out to vote.
Anybody who thinks Obama has this election in the bag is delusional. Even though MCcain has managed to piss off almost all Rebulicans, who else are they going to vote for?
Wait until the general public starts looking at Obama’s voting record in the senate. Can we say holy crap! This guy is way too liberal for middle America. We shall see how it plays out of course but I predict a MCcain win by a very small margin and I will be holding my nose while I vote.
And as an American I fall under the umbrella of nonstop scolding from our friends across the seas - or would, if I really gave a crap.
Seriously, what this election does not need is an Apocalypse Now-style intervention from the Brits or any other furriners.
Last time out we had Guardian readers involved in a campaign to convince Ohioans to vote for Kerry instead of Bush. And we know how well that turned out.
Don’t you have enough to keep busy, what with “football”, pub crawling and toad-in-the-hole?
Why doesn’t anyone ever call you out on your overly obvious trolling? First Hillary, and now McCain, are the “fucking beast from Revelation.” Go back under your bridge.
Yeah, MCcain needs to pick someone who won’t need diapers before the end of his term.
I swear, the most powerful country in the world are stuck with these two people scares the shit out of me.
All he did was say basically not to get complacent if you want Obama cause he really doesn’t want another Bush.
Can you blame him? The whole Bush presidency was global cluster fuck of incompetence and bloody mindedness.
I know if Canada had the same influence over us as the US has on the world Americans would damn sure be yelling at Canada not to vote for a Canadian Bush.
Don’t get me wrong, I like Lobsang as a poster. And I don’t mind that he has an opinion on the American election. But it’s stepping over a line when he then attempts to sway voters in a different country.
If Canada had vast amounts of influence over the US, and I didn’t like the way they did politics, the appropriate political response is to work within my system to remove that influence: vote in politicians who aren’t swayed by Canadian political might.
A lot of European nations have done just that,vis-a-vis American politics, over the past few years.
eta: Didn’t want to imply that Europeans have anything against Canadian politics.
Yea I dunno. It’s the method I think. He’s just trying to meet with us as people and explain his opinion on the matter. He’s not threatening us, not trying to bribe us, just discussing it. I can’t really begrudge someone for that.
You’re still free to do your own research, and vote for whoever you want.
Now the letter writing thing in Ohio earlier in the thread. That was a bad call. That’s trying to blackmail with a guilt trip from your cousins.
