Non-homosexual People: A Poll

  1. What do you identify as?

Straight, though it’s wavering still being discovered.

  1. Age/location?

Seventeen, Gresham, Oregon.

  1. Current relationship status?

Single. I have always been single. STILL no girlfriends. Ever.

  1. Religious/spiritual upbringing? Current beliefs?

I was brought up as a liberal United Methodist, but my parents implied that my religion was my own choice, and that they would not force me into something. I’m currently agnostic, bordering on athiest, but sometimes I’ll start believing in Christianity again after particularly strong experiences.

  1. Has your attitude about homosexuality changed?

Oh, definately. I used to think it was gross, and then it was okay. Now I’m absolutly fine with it, as well as some more issues, COMPLETELY thanks to this message board. Esprix and Anthachrite, you rock!

  1. Ever had a homosexual experience? Why or why not?

No. Nor a heterosexual experience. Or a sexual experience at all. Mainly because of lack opportunity.

  1. How are you stereotypical? Or not?

Well, I’m very non-stereotypical in some senses. I love glitter, sparkles, and glowing things. My color choices are definately more feminine (though I am well aware that many females don’t like these colors. Please don’t flame me!), as are some of my other tastes. But I do like video games and role-playing, which is traditionally more masculine in nature. So I’m probably somewhere in-between.
(Oh, and I HATE body hair.)

  1. What annoys you about the heterosexual community?

Well, the quote “I don’t mind lesbians as long as they let me watch” makes me want to strangle people. As are some of the male stereotypes of being constrained to a narrow band of tastes and levels of appropriateness. I want to be pretty without being gay, dang it!

  1. How good is your gaydar?

HORRIBLE. VERY VERY BAD. Did I mention it doesn’t work? Did I mention that EVEN THOUGH SOMEONE WAS WEARING A FREAKING PINK TRIANGLE I DIDN’T GET IT? I just outright wait for the person to mention something before making descions.

  1. Are you close to anyone who is gay/lesbian?

One of my best friends is bisexual, but the issue very, very rarely comes up. A friend at church is also gay, and he’s very cool. He even shares some of my tastes! We’re thinking of getting him a Hello Kitty shirt for Christmas.

  1. Any other comments? (I’m leaving this one blank, because I want to see what others say first.)

I don’t think so, but I want to reinterate that my more tolerant views are ALL thanks to the SDMB. Thanks again!

**1. What do you identify as? Hetero female

2. Age/location? 35/Michigan

3. Current relationship status? Married, 8 years. (two kids)

4. Religious/spiritual upbringing? Raised Catholic, 12 years of Catholic schooling. Failed religion just about every year because I just didn’t “get it”. Baptized kids just to make the grandparents breath easier. I beleive in a mish-mash of all religions, which really annoys the crap out of those who think their flavor of spiritual grape nuts is best. I’m thinking of starting my own religion, I mean, hell, it’s great pay.
5. Has your attitude about homosexuality changed?
When I was in high school, I knew what a gay guy was. Artsy theater guys based on the one very fairy poof in our school. But I never thought women were gay. It never crossed my mind. Then I tried out and made varsity softball. Lemme tell you, that was an eye opener for me after that, then I went to work at an all girls camp…by that time, I wasn’t as naive. And no, I never had an “experimentation” time period.

I don’t have a problem, never did, with anyone that is gay. Now, perky people, they should be beaten

**6. Ever had a homosexual experience? Why or why not?**No. Not that I would turn down a chance to do Angelina Jolie …if only to find out if her breasts are real or not. ( Just to put my husband out of his misery, purely scientific.)

7. How are you stereotypical? Or not? I’ve learned the hardest lesson in life that the harder you strive to be different, the more you are assimilated into the masses.
Two kids, house in the burbs, one yellow dog, a van. Yeah, I bought the farm. I do read romance novels, like a few - not all - chick flicks and desperately despise soap operas, Glamour/Cosmo/McCall’s/Ladies Home Journal magazines. I’ve never really belonged to any “clique” per se, not in high school, not after. I have the ablitity to float between the sectors and stop in to say hi, then leave before it gets dull.(A big change for this former wallflower.) I am capable of thinking for myself, having an opinion and do not do crappy useless crafts or attend craft shows, sell tupperware/partylite/pampered chef/ad nauseum. I beleive I can earn my money the old fashioned way, exploiting my children. ( Tennis, anyone  ) (Whoo, that was getting something off my chest!)

8. What annoys you about the heterosexual community?
None. We just started our own lesbo community down our little country road with two women moving in. Now, all we need are some blacks, jews and a chinaman to balance things out.

9. How good is your gaydar? Since my late 20’s, I have rarely been wrong.

10. Are you close to anyone who is gay/lesbian?By “close” I mean parent/child/sibling/best friend/roommate/favorite coworker, etc.
No, I am surrounded by straight, white-bread, blue collar, stick up their ass crowd.

11. Any other comments? I have no problems with gay marriages at all. Let them live together as a couple in the laws of the state. Why should they be able to break up and not pay a divorce lawyer great gobs of money like hetero’s?
I really want to see gay marriages pass, just to watch Falwell/Jack Chick and the like have a collective coronary.

Warms my 'eart it does… <sniff>

I’m glad I could make a difference.

Esprix

  1. What do you identify as? I go by “straight”, “het”, whatever except for “breeder”.

  2. Age/location? 32/Phoenix

  3. Current relationship status? Non-traditionally married

  4. Religious/spiritual upbringing? Current beliefs? Raised in church of Christ. Got serious religion 8-9 grade. Got new agey for a while after that. Was dedicated (not devout) Buddhist until college. Became athiest, got hardcore, remain hardcore but still try to live by the core principles of “Right thought - Right action”.

  5. Has your attitude about homosexuality changed? If so, how? Other than the fact that I was raised in a small town and my peer groups were fairly typically anti-gay (Calling someone a “fag” was an intermediate level insult, etc.), I never really had anything against homosexuals beyond the fact that the bible (as interpreted in the church my family went to) said it was wrong. I just thought of it as any other “sin” at the time. After I dropped religion and got out of the small town I realized I didn’t care what someone’s preference was as long as they didn’t aggressively hit on me after I identified myself as straight or just not interested.

  6. Ever had a homosexual experience? Why or why not? No. I find many men aesthetically attractive (Adrian Paul and Hugh Jackman are stunningly gorgeous men, I think), but not physically attractive. I see a good looking man and think, “That’s a good looking man,” but there’s no physical twinge like there is when I see an attractive woman.

  7. How are you stereotypical? Or not? I hate watching team sports. I love watching figure skating. I cry when I’m upset or just moody. I can make a day out of clothes shopping. I’m also a fairly advanced martial artist, good shot with a pistol, very good shot with a rifle, libertarian anarcho-capitalist to the nth degree. The dichotomy is astereotypical for either preference, I think.

  8. What annoys you about the heterosexual community? The fact that the middle of the bell curve needs to find someone to hate and can’t find any better cause than how someone expresses their love, someone’s body type or race/ethnicity. Believe me, you give me five minutes in conversation with someone and I can generally find a better reason to dislike them than their demographic info.

  9. How good is your gaydar? Excellent. Even my gay friends are astounded at its accuracy.

  10. Are you close to anyone who is gay/lesbian?By “close” I mean parent/child/sibling/best friend/roommate/favorite coworker, etc. Two male gay buddies, one lebsian and one female bi buddy.

  11. Any other comments? Nope I’m sleepy and logging out.

1. What do you identify as? Hetero Male
2. Age/location? Alberta, Canada
3. Current relationship status? Happily Married. 1-1/2 years. Zero kids. Plan to keep it that way for a while.
4. Religious/spiritual upbringing? Current beliefs? Very non-practicing Catholic.
5. Has your attitude about homosexuality changed? If so, how? No. Do whatever you want in your own bedroom, but I’d rather not know or hear about it.
6. Ever had a homosexual experience? Why or why not? No. I am not even remotely interested in men. A womans body is just “beautiful”
7. How are you stereotypical? Or not? I’m probably closer to a stereotypical right wing conservative than most people would want to admit… but I’m okay with that.
8. What annoys you about the heterosexual community? Violent, humiliating sex that some women seem to endure in the porno industry. Its just plain sick.
9. How good is your gaydar? I think its really good.
**10. Are you close to anyone who is gay/lesbian?By “close” I mean parent/child/sibling/best friend/roommate/favorite coworker, etc. ** Not that I am aware of. I am 99.99% certain.

Doh! Age 29… incase anyone cares.

1. What do you identify as? Hetero Male
2. Age/location? 35/Houston, TX
3. Current relationship status? Single and looking, but not in any rush, if it happens it happens.
4. Religious/spiritual upbringing? Current beliefs? Began Catholic, then switched to Episcopal (so my mother could get my father to go, he refused to attend Catholic church). As far back as I can remember I feel that I was an agnostic even though I did not know what that was and that there were others like me. Currently I am borderline agnostic/athiest.
5. Has your attitude about homosexuality changed? If so, how? Yes, at first I thought it was plain gross, I mean with so many neat women out there. Like someone above said, I did not know women could be gay. But now I am 100% live and let live. This life is short and difficult, if one can find happiness, then more power to them.
6. Ever had a homosexual experience? Why or why not? No. I totally adore women. I have never even had the oppertunity, though if I ever did or do, I would politely turn it down, but sometimes it would just be nice to be asked.
7. How are you stereotypical? Or not? Not very, I can’t stand watching sports, I would much rather go out and do something, the older I get the more I hate cars and driving. I love cuddling with women and talking for all hours of the night. I like to cook. And I like to satisfy my SO (when I have one) first before I let myself be satisfied much of the time. (Although the women I have been with have felt this was wierd and did not appreciate it.)
8. What annoys you about the heterosexual community? Nothing that is not in every community, I mean each one has there jerks.
9. How good is your gaydar? Horrible, I never received mine.
**10. Are you close to anyone who is gay/lesbian?By “close” I mean parent/child/sibling/best friend/roommate/favorite coworker, etc. ** No, there are a few co-workers that are, and I have been to parties and out to eat or have a beer with some of them, we get along well but are not really what I would call “close” friends.
