I will continue to ignore the motherfucker. Any other option would adversely affect my health.
In 2016 my wife and I were seriously planning to move to the US. We had gone so far as seeing a real estate agent in Brooklyn where our daughter lives. But put off making a decision until after the election. And then decided to stay put. Three years later, we sold out house and moved to a condo and whatever happens we probably stay put.
I think you people thinking it will be for only four years are dreaming. It is obvious that if Trump wins this time, he will not be planning to leave in four years, XXIInd amendment be damned. If electors vote for him, who will stop them. Certainly not SCOTUS that is in his pocket.
I’ll hope that their general incompetence will hamper their agenda until their failure to act becomes their downfall.
I’m straight, white, male, middle-aged “landed gentry” as it were. Their socioeconomic policy aims won’t be aimed at hurting me. It could hurt because it’s stupid and will crash the economy.
I doubt they’ll make hurting atheists directly a top priority. I do have a day job in local government that relies on Medicaid and Medicare funding. That could be in jeopardy.
I will be doing nothing different. Although I would love to move to a state that doesn’t have winter I’ll never get my wife to agree. I’ll be right here collecting my pensions. I’m sure there will be things that suck happening but it’s not the end.
Leave? I think he will be lucky to be alive in 4 years. He certainly doesn’t take care of himself.
I truly don’t know. I may be living in the US by then, or I may still be in Canada waiting for my green card, which I applied for in 2019. I have no real idea what rights a green card holder has to protest or otherwise voice opinions about US policy. As a performer, Project 2025 will only reduce my opportunities for work, and will certainly have a negative effect on my American wife’s work in the arts as well.
We have the option of selling everything and moving home to Canada, but if the US becomes the shit show that Project 2025 proposes AND if that slimy turd Pierre Poilièvre gets a majority government, Canada is going to be only slightly less bad than the US.
I may well split my time evenly between the US and Canada so I can keep my health care, for anything my wife’s health insurance won’t cover.
You can say anything you want and write anything you want, to whomever you want, regardless of your green card status. Are things different in Canada?
I think the big difference is that if Trump wins the White House and the GOP controls the House and Senate, he has virtually unchecked control with a right wing majority in the Supreme Court. PP as PM can certainly change things but not to the same extent.
Honestly, I’m a little concerned about the disparaging things I’ve said about him. Things on the internet never go away.
We know that if he gets elected it will be the revenge/retribution tour. If (a big if) he gets a team to search for any little bit of negative views of the man, we know that he will send his new secret police after them.
That’s probably the first thing he would do. Perhaps he will use his Space Force. Jut give them new duties. I’m not joking.
But to hell with that asshole. Hopefully the First Amendment will stand up. Not that it matters with the corrupt SCOTUS.
I have said some pretty strong things about him and that disgusting party through the years. I also loudly proclaim I am an atheist.
Let them come for me if that’s what they want.
I just don’t care.
Yeah if I get busted helping people get abortions, my internet history will sink me.
So we will seriously consider going back to the UK (I say going back but it wouldn’t be going “back” for my wife and kids) My wife and I have had serious conversations about this, not an idle hypothetical.
What shocked me is my in-laws who are conservative church going immigrants from the Caribbean, who really struggled and worked crazy hard to build a life here (and have voted Republican in every election since they’ve been citizens before 2016), have had the same conversation. They have decided they’ll likely move back to the Caribbean if he gets in.
I live in a blue state that thumbed it’s nose at Trump the last time he was president. Our next presumptive governor has been our state’s attorney general the last 12 years and did a pretty good job of shutting down any Republican attempt to effect anyone in our state. Even the Republicans running for governor sound more like Democrats these days with their promises to protect women’s rights. I wouldn’t trust either of them, neither has done anything remarkable in the past.
I’m old and my health is in decline so I won’t be able to do anything. If they mess with social security and medicare, I’m screwed.
I sure do worry about my family.
I worry for my daughter and two granddaughters because they are female. I worry for my grandson because he is of mixed race and the fact that he was born here in California won’t matter to these people. We already know what birth certificates mean to them.
Blue state coastal “elite” here. (no money tho)
Seriously, hunker down and “hope” the guardrails hold. Boycott any products associated with GOP or trump. (yes, sort of fanciful I know)
Semi-seriously, join the Underground Resistance, if that arises.
This, essentially. I’ll have to see how things shake out, and that could take hours or months or even a year or more. I’ve been saying, not hyperbolically, since 2016 that we are daily edging closer to Civil War II.
Assuming Trump 47 is exactly as bad as Trump 45, no better no worse, I’ll probably just do what I did last time – cringe, bitch, pray, post on FB, get involved with local progressive causes, lather rinse repeat. But if I sense the mood darkening enough that I think his people are going to start shooting – and there’s a guy down the street who’s made it clear that he’s simply waiting for orders – I’ll probably relocate. Where? Who the fuck knows. I’ll figure that out as we go along, I suppose.
No one is going to mess with social security or Medicare. Trump’s base is not rich. They rely on social security and Medicare too. They believe they are entitled to it while somehow not thinking of it as an entitlement. Even CNN factchecked Harris when she said Project 2025 was going after it.
If his base gets him back in the White House, he won’t give a shit about them. He will focus on revenge, and some sort of dictatorship/monarchy. In that case welcome Don Jr. as President.
On a personal level, I intend to use sex, drugs and rock and roll as a panacea for the existential angst that would accompany a Trump victory.
On a broader level……and this is a line I’ve used many times before……this isn’t the kind of fight you win, it’s the kind of fight you fight. It’s not going to be over if Trump wins. It’s not going to be over if Harris wins. Either way, there is still important work to be done. Sometimes that work leads to real progress, which is satisfying and rewarding, and sometimes that work involves attempting to slow the regression of progress, which is frustrating as fuck, but still important. So I’m still going to fight the good fight……also, lots of sex, drugs and rock and roll.
I really think that Trump 2024 would be exactly as bad as Trump 2016: not a particularly big deal in the day-to-day lives of most Americans while in office, but allowing damage that will build to the point of insurmountable. Biden has spent four years of hard work and has not managed to undo all of Trump’s damage, and of course the Supreme Court is its own issue.
I emigrated to Canada some years ago (I’m half Canadian, so it was easy). I’m actively pursuing European citizenship-by-heritage just in case. And I marvel at all the people here and among my friends who just deem it impossible to leave. Since I left, most of my close American friendships have diminished (but not all), and it probably helps that I’m a gay only child so there’s really no next generation beyond cousins’ children.
I guess the gist of this is that I think we can all ride out Trump without too much difficulty, but you’d all be smart to think seriously about emigration in the longer term, because my view is that America as a whole is not able to improve, ESPECIALLY if there’s another 4 years of Trump or Vance, and life can be so much better elsewhere.
Yes that is the sky is falling theory. I don’t buy it. The rich guys that really back Trump don’t want a dictatorship. They want things the way they are but better for them. Key SCOTUS rulings will do that. No need to back an empty suit like Junior. Trump is not all powerful even if he wins. If he loses either the yokels or the powerbrokers he will be rendered ineffective. One lesson learned from 2016 is Trump is lazy. His revenge will be mostly putting dumb bad people in important spots and truthing out insults at 3AM.
He’s not taking away social security. Now they are floating the idea of make SS money non-taxable to seniors. They know what his base is. They don’t want to get rid of social security
