Non-USA Dopers: Stand and be counted. Please.

To avoid such a further thread evolving, I have found a politically correct term- British Islands which includes England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man.

Therefore the whole shebang could be called:

“The British Islands and The Republic of Ireland”

‘Cite?’ for all of these  (The one I know something about is football, where the IOM team exists but isn’t recognised by Fifa.)

Cite?! Or did you miss out a ‘not’ in this sentence?

…excluding Bermuda, the Falklands, Saint Helena, Gibraltar, Montserrat…"

Legally correct/Politically Correct.

OK, legally correct, but still not unambiguous when used outside of such a context!

IOM has no Olympic Recognition-

http://ioc.unesco.org/iocms/categories.php?category_no=2

Who else would they compete for but the UK?

They have nation status for the Commonwealth Games:

http://www.thecgf.com/countries/intro.asp?loc=IOM

According to:

They play:

Cricket in the Lancashire League
Rugby in English Leagues

Additionally any IOM resident would be eligible to play in any British Team in any sport as they have Full British Citizenship (save for some EC exclusions):

There is no Manx citizenship. Manx people are classed as British citizens but those defined as Manx under Protocol Three have a special endorsement placed in their passports preventing them from freely living or working in EU states.

They probably would be eligible for Scottish, Welsh, English or Northern Irish Teams via grandparents if appropriate.

Similar for the Channel Islands- was there not a fairly famous educated footballer from the CI a few years ago?

also indicates that the IOM government was forced to back down over birching and sodomy laws. Harold Wilson’s 1970s government forced the Channel Islands to tighten up their banking laws by threats to impose changes via parliament in London.

I said in reality, not in fancy legalese.

I can think of no area where the British Government would allow the CI or IOM to do anything that seriously threatened the UK. How would the CI or IOM challenge such a decision.

Why did they both back down over locally important issues (birching, sodomy and Finance) when confronted by London.

I am uncertain whether the Monarch is monarch alone of the IOM and the CI as she is of Canada, Australia and New Zealand for instance where she has a separate person- Queen of (Insert State) when considering their business. IIRC she retains her Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland personage when considering matters regarding the CI and IOM, and therefore is under direction of her Prime Minister in these matters.

But maybe a useful heading for the people in this thread.

A brief tour around Wikipedia shows that since 1930:

The Monarch has been seen as the Queen/King of the dominions- Aus, NZ, Canada etc., but not ofor the IOM or CI. As Queen of (X) she acts according to her ministers instructions in those countries.

The Monarch is the titular Lord of Mann and Duke of Normandy as ruler of respectively the IOM and the CI. I can find no cite that she has the constitutional prerogative to act outside of the instruction of her British Prime Minister (as was the case before the Balfour Declaration for all parts of Empire).

Unless you can find a countervailing cite, I will continue to maintain that the effective political power over the Islands is the current British Prime Minister. That this is exercised with a light touch is another matter, but if push came to shove, the islands can only ask ‘How High?’ when the British Prime Minister tells them to jump.

I wouldn’t like to be pointing out the obvious or anything but NZ is is a Pacific Island. We are 3 (main) islands in the pacific after all.

Calm kiwi checking in. Thanks for remembering me

Yep, and Smeghead, as I said earlier.

Just to clarify something about the summaries I have posted:

Unless the Dopers posted themselves, and thereby showed willingness to be counted, or had their data provided as Antonius Block has done (Name-Member Status-Number of Posts-Location – all of which items appear in a Poster’s heading), I have not included their names in the summaries. Whether they are still active (members even) or whether they want to be counted is something I’m leaving for others to own.

Since Antonius Block’s entries are in the same format as the summary file’s I can copy/paste directly and that’s simply done.

If you’ve mentioned others’ names and they haven’t been included in the summaries, and you want them to be, please reenter their data in the Antonius Block format and I’ll copy/paste them in.

Due to the significant number of multiple posts in this thread:

and to the fact that some posts are by USA Dopers, and in spite of the fact that some names provided by Antonius Block have yet to appear in actual posts, the post-count and the total of names in the summaries don’t match up.

Perhaps the summary idea is a bit superfluous. Perhaps you prefer to do your own accounting. In any case, due to the time it takes to deal with the simplistic Notepad file I’ve been maintaining, I have chosen not to do a lot of lookups on names provided by others. I hope that’s understandable.

I also hope this clarifies why some things may not be as you might wish.

Another latecomer brit here, The Nadsters pointed the way and all appear to have been counted as far as I can see.

Located in Washington, Tyne & Wear, England. More or less central between Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, Sunderland and Durham.

I’m from Glasgow originally, but been in IOM for about two years now.

Yup, gotta agree.

From here:

The Tynwald (Manx Government) has legislative authority over domestic matters (including taxation! Yay!) but the UK Government deals with international relations and defence of the Island.

Also, the Tynwald is the oldest continuous parliament in the world and (i think) the only tri-cameral one.

Thanks for remembering me, Sunspace. I really should update my location, as I only spend a few months a year in Tokyo, now.

Only a few months a year…! :: sigh ::
I’m still envious.

So… when’re we gonna have another TronnaDope? I did one and Kyth did one and now it’s someone else’s turn.

I’m 99% sure that Smeghead is not Canadian.

I’m a Brit living mainly in Brighton (but also partly in Guildford and spending a lot of time in London and Stevenage and a significant proportion of my time on trains).

Woohoo - I lived in Guildford for a year way back in '94. Absolutely loved it (given that I spent the prior 6 months in Chelmsford, Essex)

[tiny nitpick]
I only used that format because I knew it would help you cut ‘n’ paste into your own database from post #92. It’s really “Zeldar format”: I personally would use something like a semi-colon as a delimiter between fields to help with any later processing.
[/tiny nitpick]

I wrote a quick-and-dirty program to automate the mining of data from the SDMB user profile pages and spit them out in “Zeldar format”. If you like, Zeldar, I’ll be happy to run some of the not-yet-added names through the “Zeldarizer”. I won’t do too many at a time, since each one currently involves a SDMB thread search to get the profile page corresponding to the username, and it’s this profile page that’s “Zeldarized”. I can’t imagine the SDMB mods being too thrilled about automated searches tiring out the hamsters! I don’t think there’d be a problem with the occasional search, however – say once an hour.

[The only way that I can see gettting the user profile page without doing a thread search is by going brute-force through the “user numbers” starting with Lynn Bodoni at #2 and going through to the most recent member, #60452 mollusk[sup]*[/sup] . That would keep the hamsters really busy, and even if one only counts those with “Member” or “Charter Member” status, it’s going to take a human a lot of time to sort out the non-USA locations.]

I do have a few more non-USA Dopers to add to the list (in Zeldar format of course!):

[[sup]*[/sup]There’s a discussion of member numbers here. I noticed that there is no “Number One” and that Ed Zotti is “Number Six”, and was all set to comment on similarities to The Prisoner (and finally unmask Ed as Cecil!) but I figured that someone must have noticed this! Naturally, this being the Dope, it’s all been done before…]

Another Aussie currently living in Auckland NZ. As you can see from my post count, I tend to lurk more than I post these days.
