I second that. Note to vegetarians, many if not most omnivores hate fake meats, and often soy based products too. Our digestive systems are not used to the–hah!–special properties of soy in the lower GI tract. So if you’re serving a meal to a group that includes non-vegatarians, it’s best to go with a meatless pasta dish of some kind, or something similar, or something like lentil or bean soup of some sort.
Beer, fried cheese, and [DEL]hot wings[/DEL] french fries
Really? Huh. I’ve never heard of that. Anyone else have this problem? I haven’t, but now I’m wondering how many of my guests I’ve inadvertently made uncomfortable. Could it just be that **Spectre **is sensitive to soy proteins?
My favorite has to be vegetarian sausage biscuits and gravy, made with Morningstar Farms patties. We omnivores at the WhyHouse actually prefer it to real pork sausage!
Vegetable lasagna is, of course, wonderful as well.
This vegetarian puttanesca recipe is a real winner, too.
Persian Food tends to survive quite well sans-flesh.
Is cheese fondue a “meal”? If not
Pasta with cream/cheese based sauces.
Pretty much any non-meat pasta dish, especially ones that include mushrooms.
And my mom’s potato salad.
Ploughman’s Lunch
Pasta/tortellini with alfredo sauce, broccoli, mushrooms, peppers, etc.
Pasta/tortellini with marinara and cheese
Pasta/tortellini with olive oil, sauteed garlic and shredded asiago
Tortellini salad
Omelettes with veggie sausage, cheese, peppers, onions and mushrooms
Quesadillas
Hummus and naan bread
Salsa mixed with avocado and shredded sharp cheddar cheese, scooped up with tortilla chips
Salad
Grilled cheese sandwich with basil leaves and/or spinach
Actually, I usually only have meat with dinner–breakfast and lunch are more likely to be meatless.
Pasta Primavera, hands down.
Eggplant parmesan. I make it once a week, alongside the inferior chicken parmesan for my SO. However, sometimes I add a bit of bacon in the food processor with the breadcrumbs.
hummous or baba ganouge (which I’m sure I’ve misspelled) with picked vegetables on the side.
At least, that’s my favorite this week.
I also like salads, assorted plums (at the farmer’s market near work I’ll sometimes buy 3-4 varieties), stir fried vegetables, various dashi-based soups, and have been known to make a meal out of several varieties of mushrooms served over rice. There’s so much good food that doesn’t require meat or dairy!
Really, I’m an omnivore.
And there we have an oxymoron-ish phrase. If you’re ‘omni’ then you’d not be hating anything. I must’ve missed the memo that declared you the spokesperson for everyone who eats, BTW.
Yves makes veggie ‘neatballs’ out of soy that are a tasty treat. I know that back when I ate much more meat, my dad made me an all-veggie meal that was so amazing I never realized I’d had no meat. I don’t remember it all; it was several dishes - but the cauliflower soufflé was outstanding.
Snagged! Thanks, that looks great.
I’m an omnivore. I certainly don’t hate fake meats though I’m picky about them. But then my husband is vegetarian so that’s one of the compromises that work for us. Last week we had just the tastiest morningstar farms grillers’ burgers (I think that’s what they were called) with all kinds of yummy burger fixings. They weren’t a big juicy slab of beef but they were just fine in the frozen pattie line of things.
I’ve been eating low-meat for so long, Mum didn’t serve it every day, and with the vegetarian at home I rarely cook meat unless it’s just for me or I’m entertaining, that I’m not sure I either qualify to answer this thread or could pick one food alone. Last night my husband made this amazing puy lentil and spinach soup that is rapidly approaching contender status for favourite. I’m fond of his marinated mushrooms too. But I guess if I had to pick one favourite non-meat meal it would have to involve pesto somehow. I really, really love pesto.
Pad Thai.
I don’t have just one. I love grilled cheese sandwiches, meatless manicotti, lasagna, ravioli…any cheese and pasta dish, really. I like eggs fixed in various ways, as long as the yolk is cooked through. Salad with garlic bread is quite tasty and filling, as long as the salad isn’t just lettuce and tomato.
Generally, though, I will eat meat with the majority of my meals. If I don’t eat meat at a meal, I’ll usually have eggs and/or dairy as a part of the meal.
Roughly dice avocado, cucumber, and tomato. Mix. Souse with vinaigrette. Eat.
spaghetti aglio e olio
margherita pizza
Butternut squash ravioli with tomato sauce, basil and goat cheese.
Cheese pizza, with extra cheese, some more extra cheese, and a generous sprinkling of parmesan on top of that.
Which reminds me of another fave: white pizza with spinach and mushrooms.
Palak Paneer, an Indian dish with spinach and cheese
Tortellini with either pesto or vodka sauce
black bean burritos with extra hot sauce from the Mean Bean
ribbon pasta with jalepenos, arugula, and mozzerella from The Five and Ten
a "casserole" I make with brown rice, beans, enchilada sauce, and cheese
