I received word today that the ship will be hosting a congressional delegation on August 26.
With heavy heart, I must tell you that I am forced to cancel the tour of the ship on that day. I apologize for any inconvenience which this may cause you. I hope I am letting you know early enough so that no irreparable damage will be caused to your vacation plans.
I looked so forward to meeting all of you and showing off the IKE of which I am so proud.
Should you still care to meet for dinner and drinks on that day, I will be finished with work by at least 5 p.m. and am willing to meet and apologize (read: grovel) in person. Given that the enticement of the tour is gone, I fully understand that many of you “out-of-towners” will justifiably wish to spend your weekend elsewhere.
Chief, I didn’t see this posted at Fathom, so I went ahead and quoted your OP over there for you. It’s nearing four a.m. at my house, I’m not even a little bit tired, and I figured you were probably bummed enough that you didn’t even think about it. Hope you don’t mind.
OH, and I’m sure that most people will STILL want to make the trip, just to meet up with each other and hang out. No worries, honey. It ain’t your fault.
But I’ll need to confirm duty rosters, visitation schedules and my personal schedule. I had the tour penciled in and had actually re-scheduled three visits around it, but certain things (in the military, at least) seem to take priority.
I don’t want to try schedule it again now, and have to cancel again later.
Chief,
Are you ever coming near Tampa? We do have the closest deep water port to the panama canal. You should stop by for some shore leave! I would love to see your ship. It is called a “ship” right?
Well OF COURSE congressional delegates can’t be there with us. Why, a few of the Teeming Millions would no doubt straighten this ountry out perfectly and make them obsolete, which would of course look bad to them, and put them out of a job!
So this is perfectly understandable, Chief. We’ll get 'em next time, and I don’t blame you for being proud of your ship. After all, there’s a classy dude on it named Scott!
Yer pal,
Satan
I HAVE BEEN SMOKE-FREE FOR:
Three months, one week, five days, 13 hours, 29 minutes and 49 seconds.
4142 cigarettes not smoked, saving $517.81.
Life saved: 2 weeks, 9 hours, 10 minutes.
I think you may have gotten the wrong idea. Normally, we can run a couple of tours at a time – it’s not like I don’t want them bumping into a few Dopers!
But I’m responsible for the visit and have been designated the Congressman’s escort officer. I am an awesome chief, but I still haven’t quite perfected being in two places at one time. Though some of my younger sailors would probably dispute that statement!
I know yer upset, but if you check over on the Fathom board, some of us are still interested in coming down just to hang out, drink, and be merry. (Including me…hell, I have to get down that way sometime soon anyway.) If you know a place where we could meet, I’ll volunteer to organize things.
Yeah, I’m definitely still up for a get-together, if only to meet some of my favorite Dopers IRL for the first time and hang with some others I already know.
Chief, you at liberty to say which Congresscritter?
but I can’t pass by this opportunity to hug Chief Scott. He helped me SO much on some research I was doing for a story.
((hug))
And if Girl By Sea wasn’t positioned RIGHT next to me on Shayna’s SD people pages, I’d pinch yer bum. But she looks like she could kick my ass, so I’ll behave.
If Falc and others are still up for it on the 26th…
May I suggest dinner at 5:30 or 6 at either the Outback or Joe’s Crab Shack at the Waterfront in downtown Norfolk? Both are right on the harbor, reasonably priced and there is a shitload of relatively cheap municipal parking right across the street.
After dinner we could remain for drinks or adjourn to Le Bar, Happy Times or the Irish Pub right in the Waterfront, or head across the street to Stormy’s a sports bar in the Marriott.
Either way, I’ll still be staying at either the Marriott or Sheraton for the evening. I will be there by hook or by crook!
