and other meat-eaters…in case you didn’t know, there is a restaurant/butcher in SLO that has THE best beef I’ve ever eaten in my life, bar none. Absolute perfection. It’s called McClintocks, and it’s on 101 itself, just a smidge south of SLO.
Just letting you know in case you wanna pick some up on your way home…
My company has just put me on notice as of today to be immediately available for an overseas process field service call in the far east. It is one our most important new customers, with the potential for a seven digit contract. I have no choice but to put all other plans on hold.

Of course we’ll have room for you :). We asked for room for 30, so we’d have enough for the maybes.
There seems to be a couple of airports in SLO:
Byard Jeff San Luis Obispo County Airport
San Luis Obispo, CA 93401
(805) 541 - 8741 (Voice)
Airport-Slo County - Information Airport Management, Parking Information
901 Airport Drive
San Luis Obispo, CA 93401
(805) 781 - 5205 (Voice)
There does seem to be an Amtrak stop in San Luis Obispo as well. So you might consider that.
I don’t want to name names until the others are sure, but we will get our own room, so all we really needed to know was if there was room for us at dinner. And I would love to tour the Hearst castle.
The train would take too long, so I will see about getting all the way to SLO by plane. If I can’t, is anyone coming from San Fransisco who could give me a ride from there?
Air travel is probably for the best, Scottchier. I just checked prices from Seattle to San Luis. They were 171 dollars, and that was one way! (Of course, I might be 5000 miles off base, for some reason I thought you were from the Seattle area, forgive me if I am wrong.)
The SLO airport is a small one, but they do have flights that fly in. I found a couple from Seattle on Expedia, so I have no doubt you will be able to find something.
Oh lord monster, we have so few So Cal people attending that you had BETTER make it. Even if you have to sell your family into the white slavery market.
Ok, I hereby announce my intentions to attend SLO-Dope. It’s not definite yet, but I’ll know for sure by tomorrow evening – I just have to balance my check book first!
Monster104, I can give you a ride, but I’m actually not planning on staying overnight. (I’m a cheapskate myself, and that’s British Open weekend :D.) So if you’re overnighting it you’d need to make other arrangements, at least for getting back. Of course, not staying would take care of your expense problem.
I just got off the phone with the Hearst Castle Group Reservations people, and I got bad news, and good news.
Bad news first - Saturday tour ain’t gonna happen. At this point there are only 1 to 3 tickets left for every available time.
Good news - There are some spots available for early Sunday, of course the best time if we have a large group is 8:00, but I have this suspicion that everybody will be pretty hungover. They also said that if we have a group of 12 or more we can get a group discount of 10%. We can call the day of, up to an hour in advance, so maybe we can do a roll call at breakfast on Sunday and see who wants to go.
Sunday is fine with me, Slacker, 'course, I figure I’m riding with you (right?) and I don’t have to be anywhere until, what, 11PM Sunday, so count me in for whatever.
When is everyone arriving - Saturday sometime, and just staying one night?
I’ll also be driving up and have a fairly comfy 4-door car, so I can also accomodate passengers if anyone needs a ride. Be forewarned, though - I’m a smoker, and no, I won’t pull over and smoke outside, I’m afraid (though I won’t smoke in the hotel room, Scotti and Mauv).
I haven’t the time to read the whole thread - is there one particular hotel that people are staying at, or do I need to research accomodations on my own?
Looking forward to meeting everyone! This should be a blast!
A bunch of us are staying in a suite at the Madonna. I think a bunch of us will be getting in on Friday. They probably still have rooms available - http://www.madonnainn.com
The Phoenix contigent will be arriving sometime late Friday night/early Saturday morning, depending on how much traffic there is.
You can smoke around me, hon … I’ve started back up again
I think Scotti and I are sharing a room … you are more than welcome to share with us. We haven’t made any reservations yet. (I’m still not 100% sure I’m going, but will know that by tomorrow evening, at which time I’ll make reservations – unless Scotti wants to do that?)
I won’t be getting a room at the Madonna Inn, however, my budget does not allow for that. I’m thinking of something more in the Motel 6 type range. If that’s ok with Scotti?
Well, after the tour was rescheduled I started to dither about staying overnight, but then Mercutio sent me an email offering his kidney if I’d drive him home that night, so you’ll have to go on without us. It’s an awfully long drive for just a dinner, though, so I was wondering what the Phoenix gang was planning on doing on Saturday, and if I could join them. You guys mind?
Now the only other question is, what kind of wine goes with kidney?
