I asked why that specific quote was relevant. If he’s already taken off of machines and the family requests a DNR order, that means he’s alive by definition.
Yes, and see “no brain activity” for my definition of “brain dead”.
We’re back to repetitive and redundant discussion. All of your questions have been answered and my reasons stated (many times). The problem has been addressed and resolved. I’m not replying to this thread again unless a new, pressing issue arises.
Thank you Dr Thoughts. Since Ellen actually took care of the thread title, you can go back to bed as you stated was one of your reasons for not wanting to fix it to begin with.
You seem to be missing that I’m asking you about a specific quote.
Anyway, you keep talking about his brain activity, yet hoped that he would pull through and that you if he doesn’t die in a day or two, you’ll change the title. That’s the issue I have with you. That’s not good modding. Changing a thread title is not a lot of work.
I know its a really bad idea to try to interject humor in this thread but I’ve exhibited poor judgement before and I knew before opening the thread that this was about Tom Petty who I admire very much but ---------
My call would be that no-one is dead until the official SDMB DeathShroom weighs in.
So much nitpicking here about semantics. What difference does it make? If he’s in a coma, he’s in a coma. Even if he returns to life from his brain dead state, he likely won’t be the same person we remember. Sometimes it’s just time to say goodbye, unless there’s a reason to hope. Nitpicking semantics won’t bring him back or undo the heart attack.

He really is dead. CNN just reported it.
I just checked and there’s no RIP in that thread title, so there’s still hope.
If he isn’t dead he’s doing a great imitation of a dead man. I think it’s safe to say we won’t be seeing any more live gigs from him. This thread raises an interesting point though. What is the standard here for reporting a death? One news report? Two? More? Maybe we should always add allegedly!
IMO, TMZ reporting it is a pretty good indication.
So…you won’t back down?
(sorry)
CBS seemed like a good source, but they were misled by the LAPD.
I think the “being taken off of life support” was a pretty strong indication that it was matter of when, not if.
So. Again, that in and of it self means “not dead”. Could we have shown him some respect and fixed the thread title? Did we really have to change it early because some guy on the internet [Idle] considered him dead and wanted to go to bed and not deal with it?
Would it have been that hard for him to change it back now that he had ‘more info’? Could he have alerted another mod that he was going to be offline and they should keep an eye on it for him or that he needed to bow out of the thread because he didn’t want to play musical chairs with the thread title?
But none of this matters anyways. Idle has stated over and over that he decides when Tom isn’t living anymore (hours earlier than any real doctor actually declared it) and barring any good news, he wasn’t going to change it back.
Odd, isn’t it. He considered Tom dead, but agreed that he would change it back if Tom was still alive in the morning. Maybe I’m that good at logic, but that makes no sense.
Brain dead = dead. But brain dead 12 hours later = not dead.
Right, got it.
Respect aside, this site prides itself on fighting ignorance and being accurate. “It doesn’t look good so why bother changing it” is ignorant, inaccurate and just plain lazy.
False.
As I’ve said countless times now (though you still seemed to have missed it every time), I said I was going to change it back in the morning if it was still the case.
I get that, Idle. But I think most Dopers would prefer that the title not say they are dead as long as there is uncertainty. If things are switching back and forth, then just leave it without any mod addition. Or, possible, include something like [death unclear].
I’m not sure if this is the case or not, but I know of at least one person who was incorrect in their timeline of the events…so just to be clear: I edited the title to include “RIP” after CBS and the LAPD confirmed that he was dead. That topic then received five reports (including one from the OP himself) asking for “RIP” to be added to the title, so I did it.
The “Oh wait, he may not be dead after all” came later, after the title was already changed and I didn’t find out about it until I got the first (of three) reports to change the thread title back (taking out the “RIP”), which was at night, two minutes before I madethis post and about half an hour before this ATMB thread was started.
This is for those who might be thinking I just added “RIP” to the title on my own, just on the thought he might die anyway…which I didn’t do. At the time I added it, it was “confirmed”.
Afterwards, it was recanted, however all of the reports I read still said “brain dead” and “all life support shut off”, which, again, is why I decided to wait on changing it back. As Joey P has pointed out, I’m no doctor, but I don’t have to be one to figure that “brain dead” pretty much means “dead”…at least by my meaning.
This is now my last post in this thread, period. Before I had said it was my last unless something new came to light that didn’t make myself repeat what I’ve already said. In this post, however, I still resort to doing that a bit…however I wanted to add in the explanation of how the timing went down just in case anyone was confused.
To close: I apologize for anyone who disagrees with my choice, but I stand by my reasons.
