Patriots received less attention than I’d expect.
But turn on the NFL network at any given moment and you were treated to coverage on the Eagles, Jets and Giants.

Heck, I’m not a fan of any NFL teams, yet I watch the Superbowl ® every year. It’s an event; that’s all.
I’ll watch the Super Bowl for the same reason I celebrate Christmas even though I’m an atheist: tradition. But I’ll echo what other posters have already said - this is the matchup I least wanted to see.
I think the big factor was that there wasn’t much new to say about the Patriots. Once you explained the Myra Kroft patches, what could you say that hadn’t been said in previous seasons?
While people complain about its over-exposure, the Tebow story was interesting and dramatic.
I’ll watch, and probably root for the Giants. But in the end I don’t really care.
But it gives me an excuse for the guys to come over and drink beer.
Any commercial worth seeing will be replayed for months on end and/or wind up on youtube anyway.
I rarely care all that much about the game itself, but it’s a great excuse for a party, and the commercials are fun. So I probably will watch.
I’ll be watching. My sis-in-law always hosts a little get-together. Plus, this is the first SB Sunday in a decade that I will have off from work.
But I’m a Niners and Eagles fan. So hope the Giants DIAF.
Joe
I dislike all New York teams on general principal. I don’t feel the same way about Boston teams, but the Pats have been in far too many Super Bowls in the past decade and I’m sick of them. While part of me is thrilled the Packers got bumped off early (and for this reason I have to hold my nose and give a slight rooting edge to the Giants), another part of me kind of wishes the Pack were playing so that I’d have a clear team to root against.
So my overall feeling about this game is a definite “meh.” I’ll watch, though, because it’s always a good party with my friends no matter who’s playing.
The way I see it, the 1986 game that had the Patriots in it (SBXX, from NBC) was good because the NE team in that, Chicago bumped off handily (46-10, IIRC). But the latest ones have not been high on my list, mainly because of a quarterback by the name of Tom Brady, of whom I have never, ever been a fan, and never will be, even to my dying day.
It’s another rematch, so people are getting all regionalistic and stubborn about it, and declaiming that it’s all about entertainment, and not football. We’ve already seen this once this year. They’ll watch anyway, of course.
I still think the guys who vote in the NFL polls got it wrong. That’s how the NFL determines which teams make the Super Bowl, right?
Oh, they got it right, just like they did the last time. ![]()
The Knicks are absolutely overexposed. They’re a terrible franchise whose record of success doesn’t match up to the Golden State Warriors’, but people treat them as though they actually matter (more so when they actually have more wins than losses).
Yeah, the Knicks are pretty consistently overexposed. They were at the center of a lot of the LeBron hype even though there was never any chance he was going to sign with them, and since last winter there’s been all of the Carmelo craziness even though they’ve been a sub-.500 team since the trade. Oh, and they signed Tyson Chandler. You can win a championship with three good players even though they’re all frontcourt guys and two of them don’t play well together, right?
We’re not sports fans, so us not watching it is a given.
But I wish we’d get invited to a bowl party, because I’ve a hankering for this horrible and good cheesy dip. It’s not a recipe I can scale down sufficiently to make it at home, it’s pure party food.
Someone invite me to come over and not watch the game, please?
Thanks for the reminder. I never remember when it is and end up trying to go out to lunch that day and dealing with all the fan noise.
I have watched every Superbowl since my youth and seen some snorers, but I’m likely going to just completely skip it this year. First, I hate the Patriots; hell, that’s an understatement. As a 'Skins fan when I’ve seen the Patriots play against the Cowboys and felt physically ill because I realized I would prefer the Cowboys to win, I realized I was more of an anti-fan of the Patriots than the Redskins. They’re absolutely the greatest abomination in all of sports. But the giants, from most of what I’ve seen, including seeing the Redskins beat them twice, they barely deserved their playoff spot and now they’re posed to win a championship because the Packers overlooked them and the 49ers muffed a punt and Eli “derp” Manning is being touted as some kind of elite quarterback? That I’d be forced to root for the Giants again just isn’t interesting to me. The whole “rematch” thing isn’t interesting, its not a David-Goliath matchup where the underdog won like last time, it’s just going to be a boring remake.
Can’t you just get them online?
