Two words: Bull and Shit. The girls were not in fact, “forced” to mete out anything.
From the linked article:
The article goes on to state that the flasher was arrested and has been charged with 14 counts related to public indecency. Chances are with that many witnesses, conviction will be a slam dunk.
Let’s recap, shall we? The guy was caught, he was arrested, will probably go to the big house for a significant period of time. Hard to see where the gratuitous beating adds anything useful, cute as it may sound to those who love to nurter revenge fantasies.
Great story, Scylla! I saved it to savor it again. “The Salivance of the Hams” definitely belongs in the collection of great posts. I’ll see to it that Opal is aware of it.
OK, if I am being whooshed by your legendary wit, so be it. I am, however, going to go ahead and take this at face value. Specifically, I would love have you comment on my take on law vs. morality (back on page 1).
In your Godwinized example, I would like to point out that the Nazis were the law, but not moral (at least by the standard of every person that I would care to associate with). I do, however, thank you for brining it up, as I was a bit to shy to do so.
In this thread, we have seen a few posters taking the position that the law is the law and that the morality of any act is an absolute, regardless of who is doing it and why.
I submit to you that it is not much of a leap of logic to state that is it the kind of people that hold these absolute views of right and wrong, based only on what the law says, that would be the same kind of folks that “do nothing when the bobby-sock thugs” come for you.
I hardly think it’s appropriate to call county a moron.
See, in many states, homosexual behavior has been illegal. In 13 states, it’s still illegal.
Now, with Lawrence v. Texas, some or all of those laws are likely to be repealed, or at least rendered completely unenforceable on constitutional grounds.
To me, based on the article, it sounds as if they were reacting to his criminal act. After all, they reacted AT THE TIME of his criminal act.
That said, I’m not sure if I agree with a beating, but if the “beating” was during the attempt to subdue him until the cops came, then…doesn’t really seem like “vigilantism”.
But like others have said, the article was kindof skimpy, so no telling which it was.
Just because some people engage in conduct that they believe they have the right to do as consenting adults in the privacy of their own homes, well, it doesn’t mean that they aren’t felons.
I don’t blame the girls for doing what they did. Course I can’t critizise them as I’ve been known to smack the shit out of guys who thought they could fuck with me. Heh
I didn’t get into fights over verbal insults though. It’s kind of like “I know what you say when I turn my back, I just don’t let it get to me”. Or tried not to. But, if you physically threatened me…
Good think they never escalated. They just found it funny, but never bothered me again.
The guy did it seven times to the same group of girls. SEVEN TIMES. I think after at least two times without the perp being apprehended by cops, despite repeated calls, some citizens’ action to apprehend is necessary.
county, there’s a fine line here that you seem to be tapdancing on. Are you merely offering a factual correction? Or are you advocating that homosexuals be jailed for committing homosexual acts? I’m not certain if you’re simply phrasing this badly or if you’re simply an absolute fuckhead, so please clear up my confusion.
We have an adult male running away from a large group of schoolgirls with (stereotype alert) his unit hanging out of the opening of his trenchcoat.
Now, I don’t much care for vigilantes. We have a legal system for a reason, and I think it should be applied to prevent the kind of excesses that result from a large number of people showing up at the local jail with a rope and bad intentions when there hasn’t even been a “show cause” hearing. I also think that being raped is probably not an appropriate punishment for stealing a car.
For all I know there may be some kind of trend where schoolgirls grab a random passerby and pull his dick out and then chase him for fun.
That said, I’d probably take enough of an interest to grab the fellah and let him explain his side of the story to me for about as long as it took all the pissed off young ladies to show up.
Should a police officer happen by, I’d be glad to commend the whole thing to the authorities, but in the meantime I’d more than likely hold his arms and offer helpful advice about where to kick.
I’d like to have a recording of the thoughts in this guy’s head. “Oh, yeah, you poor innocent girls, fear me! Fear my penis! Fear it! Hey, wait, I said fear it, not run towards me! You’re supposed to run away! Shit, I gotta get out of here, I’ll just run away and HEY, why are you grabbing me? They’re supposed to fear my phallic power, not kick me in the OOOOHHHH! Ow that hurts, I’m sorry, but my OWWWWWW demanded that I Oh, God, that’s gonna leave a mark…”
Scylla, I have a new-found respect for you. First, while we may have opposing viewpoints, I’d say we are both firmly grounded by our common roots. Second, while I have often disagreed with you on certain issues, I have always been impressed by your eloquence and style. Third, as you can well imagine, not all the girls from Laco-men had pig faces, but organization was a strong part of their curriculum. Fourth, if you ever wished to discuss ‘the old days’, just email me. First pack of liquorice from ‘Lemperts’ is on me. Unless you’d prefer a pack from ‘Poles’.
