Just curious as to how various people use the mighty Dope. How did you find the SD in the first place? Did you lurk? Which forums do you go to most? Are you a regular thread starter? Where do you post from?
Anyway, to start off, here’s mine:
I found the Straight Dope because my father has for years wanted to know how flies land on the ceiling. I typed that into a search engine and got a column from some guy called Cecil. I found the boards soon after. I don’t think I lurked much at all.

I like to think of myself as a regular poster. I’m not much of a thread starter - maybe one a month. I probably spend an hour or two here each day. And yes, I have put off having sex because I’ve been too busy Dopin’.
Anyway, mine’s pretty dull. Anybody post nude? Or from weird places? C’mon, out with it!
I usually cruise MPSIMS, IMHO, The Pit, GQ, in that order, then GD if I’m not too tired.
At night I often post drunk and nekkid. Right now I’m only a little buzzed and only wearing a shirt and a pair of panties. I think one more beer and I’ll be nude.
GD is my favorite. But I usually click on “recent posts” which often leads me to other areas.
I do wear something. It at home, it’s some sloppy “around the house only” outfit.
I don’t remember how I found the site. At first, I just read Cecil’s columns. I sent in some questions, but he never answered any of them.
Having noticed the forums, I lurked for a bit, and eventually posted two of my questions in GQ. Then I avoided the place for a while. The number of threads! The number of posts some treads got! The IQs of some posters! I feared that if I let myself get involved, I’d spend too much time here. Eventually, I sucumed. Now, I spend too much time here.
BTW all, that was my first attempt at itallics!!!

A couple years ago a friend of mine and i were having some argument about black holes or something or other and he linked one of Cecil’s columns to support one of his arguments. I read all of the archived columns over the next couple of weeks, and hungry for more, moved on to the message boards. I lurked for a long time, trying to figure out what it was all about, and how to go about not looking like a total fool once I started posting. I started a whole bunch of threads in several different forums right at the beginning, then calmed down and slowly moved back into lurking. I’ve recently de-lurked myself for the second time, and these days I stick almost exclusively to MPSIMS and The Pit, I seem to have little patience for the other forums.
I too am in my boxers right now, as I frequently am when posting. Rarely nude though, I live with too many people in too small a space to comfortably cavort au naturaltoo often.
I found the site through a link off of The Stupidist Thing You Ever Did site. I lurked for about six months before registering. I like to check it all out when I get home from work around one or two AM. What do I wear? See my screen name for a hint.
How did I find this site? Well, Mr. O, who we recently outed (and haven’t heard much from since then, BTW!)in another thread showed it to me one day… then I read all of the archives, then I moved to the message boards, registered, and lurked for about a year or so… I may have made one or two posts in this period… then last summer, I went into a posting frenzy! Why? Mostly because I was online all day, supposedly working, but mostly screwing around…
My habits? (at home)I’m usually sitting in front of the computer, in my jockey-shorts (I’m a closet nudist, I guess), drinking a beer or 5… at work, I’m dressed in business-type attire. But the “at work” posting accounts for maybe 30% of my posts… so picture me almost nude, with fat oozing over the sides of the chair. (Hey! You asked!)
I usually go to GQ first, note that there is nothing that I can answer… go to the Pit next to see who is being roasted today (sometimes I contribute)… then off to MPSIMS, where the majority of my posts are to be found (as my life is nothing if not pointless and mundane!). I usually pop into ATMB, and IMHO, and sometimes post there… and I usually look into GD for a few minutes, but rarely post there (WAY over my head, most of the time… I’m not that bright, and I know it! As opposed to some of the people who post there a lot…).
That’s it! Most of my time here is spent mostly nude, trying to seduce the wimmins in MPSIMS…
I originally learned of this site through the alt.legends.urban newsgroup, then I forgot about it for a year or so. One day I was bored and had nothing else to do, so I went through the archives to kill some time. Eventually, I wandered over to the boards and lurked for about a month before I subscribed.
When I log on, I first check out ATMB. Then I go through what I call the “big three” - GQ, IMHO, and MPSIMS, in that order. I spend the vast majority of my time in those three, though I don’t post as much in GQ. If I have time, I’ll then go to GD. Very rarely, I check out the Pit. I almost never read either of the Comments forums.
Oh, and under all these clothes, I’m completely naked.
I often post nude because I spend more or less as much time as is feasible out of my clothes, especially in the summer. Right now I’m wearing just boxers.
I spend most of my time in the Pit, actually; somewhat less in MPSIMS, somewhat less than that in GD and IMHO (tied); less in GQ, and almost none in the comments boards.
I had always loved The Straight Dope books as a kid, so it was one of the first things I looked for when I got the Internet. I found this little proto-page, which after a while expanded, became the SDMB; and a little later I got onto the boards. It wouldn’t surprise me to learn that my first post was in Comments on Cecil’s Columns.
