This type of thread has probably been covered already (what hasn’t, really?) but that’s never stopped me before, so…
Reading Carina42’s How often do you visit the boards thread got me thinking about the type of poster I am, which got me to wondering how the other dopers approach their posting on the board.
I consider myself fairly low key and inauspicious 'round these here parts. I post regularly, but nowhere near the rate of many other dopers. I pop around from forum to forum with no real preference for any certain one. I have asked and answered questions in GQ and ATMB and posted a lot of inanities in MPSIMS and IMHO (with the occassional hopefully witty one liner thrown in). I’ve been to the Pit only once or twice, although I read a lot of the threads there so I can keep up on all the dirt and the rants. I’ve posted a grand total of once in GD. I just don’t have the patience or eloquence to offer much there, although it is one of my favorite forums to read.
I don’t really flirt. I made a couple lame attempts when I first registered and I realized it just isn’t me. I don’t really do post parties or long-running back-and-forth exchanges, mainly because I’m not on the boards consistently enough to follow up.
So what does this make me? I don’t know – a semi-regular, scattershot drive-by poster? Best description I can come up with right now.
I do a lot. I like to flirt ocasionally, and say boorish, outlandish things. My fave places tend to be Mundane Pointless and IMHO. And I post all the freaking time.
I don’t post much at all. I tend to stay in IMHO, GQ, and MPSIMS. I haven’t started a thread in months and I mostly save my posts for answering GQ OPs. I also nitpick.

I prefer not to be defined.
But if I must … I do alot of drive-by’s I suppose. I like to add little quips here and there. If something really grabs me (for example this thread I’ll keep up regularly.
I don’t debate too often, I find it difficult to keep up. I ususally only participate in Great Debates if I’ve been in the thread from the get-go. I can’t jump in after 40 or so posts in a thread.
I lurk the Pit alot. I find it hilarious.
What we need here is one of Matt Groening’s “The [insert number] Types of [insert type of person]” cartoons that we can all relate to.
I guess I’m a little bit of the scatter shooting drive-by poster type that BoS mentioned, mostly in GQ and IMHO. I occasionally foray into GD like Jack Batty, and most of my MIPSIMS posts are flops. I’ve posted in the Pit a grand total of once.
We should work on some REAL names for this…and it would probably fit a number of us too.
I visit almost every day, but may not write something each time. I too, read more than anything else, and especially in the Pit, which is a scary dark place!! ALWAYS carry your own flashlight, boys and girls, candles tend to get burnt out or drip wax on your more delicate areas!
I’m the most mundane, pointless person alive so, obviously, I hang out mostly in MPSIMS. I’ve had a few instances where I actually fought ignorance, but I don’t think that I bring much value to this message board. I join post parties, flirt fests, and sympathy threads as often as they come up. Yeah, that’s about it.
Like Silver Fire feels, I also feel like I’m not a valuable poster. Being young and living a mostly sheltered life up until a few years ago, I don’t have much experience in anything, so I feel like I have nothing important and exciting to say. I don’t flirt too much, but I do like to give my opinion. I used to be a flame war queen in the old boards, but I’ve mellowed down a lot; I don’t like to fight. I’m mostly drive-by nowadays.
I get jealous of the posters with high post counts who joined much later than I did, and then it makes me want to race to get my posts to be as high, but I realized that that’s silly, so I’ve slowed down a bit.
I tend to hijack threads (sorry to all those whose posts I have subverted)
I don’t start topics too much, as I’d rather just chime in with my 1/250 of cents worth. I read almost all the threads with the exception of politics/anything by Stoidela (sorry Stoid, but I just get a headache listening to all your pent up rage over an ineffective system and ultimately inconsequential decision over what rich///
