Is anyone else excited? It’s been a long time, and I need something to get me through while I wait for Shameless to start again!
Yeah, looking forward to it. Edie Falco is one of those rare actors who can go from a type-cast character in a major series to a completely different character and pull it off. I hope Akalitus is coming back in full force.
Veep also starts season two tomorrow on HBO. Julia Louis Dreyfus is hilarious in it, and she has a great comedic cast to back her up.
It was a good first episode for the season - caught us back up, introduced a new character and looks like they are saying goodbye to another character (too bad if she really does leave…).
I read the new showrunner wanted to put more “comedy” back into this show and I think that showed this time around - not too much to make it a sitcom, but also enough to keep it pretty funny in spots.
Half an hour is too short for this show - wish it were at least hour long episodes…
Anyone still watching?
I’ve read some reviews where the reviewer thinks that the change in show runners is not for the better, but I mostly like this season. My biggest gripe is that I don’t find the change in Akalitis that believable (too sudden) and I don’t see how Carrie could ever have graduated medical school. I don’t know how many episodes Bobby Cannavale is slated for, but I found last night’s turn of events…compelling.
That was a surprise sexual encounter, for sure. The Barbie Doctor is a really annoying and unnecessary character; showing her boobs is not enough to offset her poor acting. Coop is bad enough, but he’s managed to be interesting up until now. Zoe has become more of a cartoon character this season. Jackie’s story line has taken a new turn and remains interesting, or this series would be over for me.
Yes! That’s exactly how I feel. She’s unnecessary. Adds nothing to advance the plot or show development. I’ve always thought Coop was dimwitted and annoying, but at least he makes clinically sound judgments. She couldn’t identify where the fracture was.
What I liked about Jackie and Cruz together is that it is very true that grief makes people do surprising things, and shared grief can tie us to people that we would otherwise not tie ourselves to. Then, Jackie has to run off because of one of her kids (which, coincidentally, she used as the untrue excuse to leave her date), and Cruz is left alone again, reminded that he has no kid.
The producers of this show should be on their knees every day, thanking Edie Falco for paying their salaries. She’s a phenomenal actor and absolutely carries the show.
And didn’t she look so pretty all dressed up and hair did?
She’s awesome, but I wish she’d play a character I could relate to. Carmela Soprano was odious, and Nurse Jackie is still using, only it’s people instead of drugs.
I wanted to smack her when Eddie was helping her daughter with his math, she gets a call from the cop, and instead of asking him to call back, she’s all “How you doin’?”
I’m also pissed that she didn’t let her daughter get some counseling. Daughter draws a picture, leaving dad off to the side, and Jackie thinks blaming dad will fix things? She’s in so much denial, still.
She’s an interesting character and has some good qualities, but she’s not someone I’d want in my life, in any capacity.
It’s the seriously flawed characters that give a show depth and that hold my interest. It’s what makes series like Jackie, The Wire, The Sopranos, Breaking Bad, etc. worth watching. Otherwise, we might as well watch Andy Griffith reruns.
Well, that was a quick season. Seasonette. I wish it had been longer.
That being said…good golly! I loved last week’s plot line with Ike and Zoey, although I freely admit that may be due to my infatuation with Ike. But overall, I really like how Zoey’s character has grown over time.
I don’t know if I should mention the last 3 minutes of the finale, although I guess there’s no stated expectation with regard to spoilers in this thread.
Have a mod change the title to Nurse Jackie Season 5 (Spoilers) and spoiler away. As much as I think spoilers are okay, I do think it would be unfair in a thread that someone could click on with a title that implies it’s about an upcoming season/speculation.
In other news, I can’t believe that was the 5th season already, I would have guessed it was the third.
I’ll request a mod change the thread title and since I don’t think anyone is going to stumble into here between now and then…I’ll start it off.
Do we think she’s slipping again? I think she was finally done with the pills. They mentioned that pill last week (or two weeks ago) and put a lot of symbolism behind it. She said that she looks at it once in a while to remind her about everything in her life that she fucked up. Now she’s put that part of her life behind her. OTOH, maybe she’s an addict and just wanted to get high.
I guess we’ll find out.
I have to retract my earlier post about the series taking a nosedive. Zoe’s character has suddenly gotten more interesting and this season turned out to be a good one. The ending was a bit of a shocker.
Great season and glad to hear it was renewed.
Not thrilled with the last pill…but maybe it was a one-off? (Although I doubt it.)
Glad to see British doc returned - although for 1/18th of a second and without a spoken word - does that mean a return for her next season?
Looking forward to next season!
(However, after fun and games in the Nurse Jackie hospital, now I get to see how the other half lives/dies in the final season of Dexter - starting in two weeks. How is that for opposite programming?)
She left so abruptly, I wonder if there was an IRL reason for it.
The actress, like the character, decided to move back to London. I found it weird that Eve Best was still getting top billing this season without being in the show.
She was on at the beginning of the season wasn’t she. Either way, I’m sure that was in her contract and I’m sure, assuming she broke her contract, that was all part of the negotiations.
Having said that, I wonder if she was back in town and just happened to be around for that final shot or if they shot that final scene before she left.
