I’ve got tickets to the Labor Day game against the Red Sox, as part of a eastern seaboard tour of ballparks. Now, assuming they play this game, could I safely wear my Houston Astros hat and not get ridiculed or otherwise abused? The seats are in the upper deck, first base side.
You should be OK with an Astros hat. DO NOT wear a Red Sox hat. And don’t root out loud for the Sox either.

I have been in Yankee Stadium for several Yankee/Os games, and I was just fine wearing my Orioles’ hat. I wasn’t sitting out in the bleachers tho, and I do think it’s a lot worse with Sox fans, from what I’ve heard.
You will not get beat up. Even if you wear a Red Sox jersey and a Red Sox hat. You will probably hear it from the fans if you cheer too loudly or too cleverly, but no more than you would expect at any other ballpark if you are rooting for the non-home team.
We New Yorkers, Yankee fans especially, are a civilized lot. Really.
To this we say:
To which I answer:
I have no answer. The beknighted gentleman to the south has silenced me with his eloquence. He has shown me the error in my thinking. My 20 years living in The Bronx and over 30 in New York do not compare to the power of the rolleyes smilie.
I am vanquished and ashamed. Roll your eyes no more.
It depends on where you sit. I went with another Doper to a game recently and we sat in the bleachers. The other Doper was wearing a jersey from the team that the Yankees were playing that day. He was fine, and, in fact, got some respect from the other fans for having the guts to show up wearing the other team’s colors. Elsewhere in the bleachers, however, some poor schlub came in a Red Sox cap. The crowd let him have it.

That reminds me of a Michigan-Ohio State football game I went to a few years back. It was at Ann Arbor, and my buddy and I got seats in the student section. Some guy decided to wear his scarlet and grey Andy Katzenmoyer jersey, and the Wolverine fans pelted him with marshmallows the entire game.
I have been to a couple of Michigan-Michigan State games in East Lansing, and let’s just say my Maize and Blue gear was not exactly too popular.
Ok Biggirl, if I will probably put that in the funniest post on the board.
Yeesh, Zev, why not mention my name? I’m not a pariah around here just yet…
That’s right, it is I that Zev is referring to. I wore my Royals jersey and cap to a game at Yankee Stadium in which the Yankees were playing the Royals. People were very friendly to me, although, since the Royals lost, I got a number of jeers as we left the stadium. (Funny, no one yelled at me “Royals suck!” the previous night, when I wore the same jersey and cap, and the Royals won.)
Nonetheless, the Red Sox are an entirely different category. Showing any support for the Red Sox is the number one way to commit suicide at a sporting venue in New York city. (#2 is wearing an Islanders jersey to a Ranger game in MSG.)
No Red Sox fans will get lambasted in Yankee stadium, as well they should.
No, Red Sox fans will get lambasted in Yankee stadium, as well they should.
Or
Red Sox fans will get lambasted in Yankee stadium, as well they should.
I wasn’t sure if you wanted to be identified.

A Houston Astros cap will not present a problem. Neither will most other National League teams, except maybe Mets or Diamondbacks, and then only if you are overly vociferous in rooting against the Yankees.
A Red Sox cap/t-shirt at a Yankees-Red Sox game is likely to elicit a few cat-calls, but will usually not cause real trouble unless you’re actually looking for it. However, I have seen at least a few scuffles at every Yankees/Sox game I’ve been to. The most memorable was a game in the late 80s in which several Red Sox players, including Roger Clemens, went into the stands after a Yankee fan who had stolen Jim Rice’s hat when he made a play close to the wall.
