NYC MegaDopefest Schedule – Jan. 2-5, 2003 – Please check in

I know I’m in for dinner on Saturday, and probably for going out on Friday night, but that sort of depends on HoP logistics. I’m bringing a friend with me, and I think he’s in for whatever I’m in for. Including atrocious grammar. Anyhow, you see what I’m saying. Oh, and we’re in for brunch, as well…I hope Billdo isn’t too insulted that I’m not availing myself of his hospitality this year! I can just see him withholding the cream cheese. The horror…

ANYHOW…

I don’t know about museums or other outings on Saturday. I’m really going to hang around with people I’ve been getting to know. I think this time I want to concentrate more on the people and less on the places, if y’all see what I’m saying. I understand about shared experiences being some of the ties that bind and everything…but…

Meh. Shadding up now. Won’t be anywhere NEAR enough time to see all of the people I want to see for as long as I want to see them.

Whoa. I think I’m getting stoked.

**w000000000000000000000000t!!!

Don’t ask what’s up with that coding. I didn’t do it. It’s the Elder Gods. The Alien Masters. The Illuminati. Fnord. These aren’t the droids you’re looking for.

MEGADOPEFEST PAGE 3 UPDATE

In this update we will finalize the Saturday afternoon plans. Confirmations (and unfortunately some un-confirmations) have been coming in, but we still need to hear from a bunch of people.

For all those planning to attend (or who are listed as attending but will not), please post in this thread confirming that you will be there (or won’t or are still not sure). Also, please mention whether you plan to come to the Thursday Korean Dinner and/or the Billdo Bagel Brunch so that we may make reservations and send directions.

Also, in order to keep this thread to a manageable length, we would appreciate it if you could keep posts in this thread to comments and questions about the Dopefest, the attendees, and arrangements. Also, we will be posting additional details about events, parking, transportation lodging and other items of interest. If you want to start a pre-Dopefest flirting or woo-hoo I’m going to New York thread, for pre-Dopefest chatter, feel free.

Thursday, January 2: The Pre-Dopefest Korean Dinner

For those in the City a bit early, we will be having dinner at Kum Gang San, 49 West 32nd Street., just east of Sixth Ave. at 7:00 p.m. 1/2/3/9, to 34th St/Penn Sta, B/D/F/V or N/R/Q/W to 34th St Herald Square. Parking Map

Please post if you plan to attend so we can make reservations.

Friday, January 3: The Welcome to Dopefest Gathering

After an extensive search, we have identified a Friday Night base of operations. From 7:00 p.m. until at least 11ish, we will have New York dopers there to greet all visitors at The Bleecker Street Bar, 58 Bleecker Street, between Broadway & Lafayette Street. 4/5/6 to Bleecker Street, F/V to Broadway/Lafayette, N/R to Prince St. The Bleecker Street Bar is handicapped accessible, with a no-step entrance in the back. Dopers under 21 planning to attend, please e-mail me. We should have a sign saying “Friends of Cecil A.” or something to that effect. Parking Map

Around the Bleecker Street Bar are tons of places to eat and other forms of entertainment. We plan to sponsor a group to go dancing, leaving from the Bleecker Street Bar at 11:00 p.m.

Saturday, January 4: Daytime Cultural Events

During the day on Saturday, January 4, we will be sponsoring several events:

[ul][li]The Dim Sum Lunch in Chinatown will meet at Noon at Ping’s, 22 Mott Street (between Mosco and Worth streets). Take the N/R/Q/W or 6 to Canal Street, walk east on Canal and south on Mott. Parking Map After the lunch, OxyMoron will be leading an Art of the New York City Subways tour. People will also branch out for a free-form exploration of downtown New York bookshops. We’ll try to scare up a tour guide for that.[/li][li]The American Museum of Natural History. UncleBill and GeoBabe will be coordinating this event. Meet at the lobby of the Hotel Olcott, 27 West 72nd Street at Noon. We’ll be going out to brunch beforehand, meeting at the hotel at 10:30. Take the 1/2/3 or C train to 72nd Street. Parking Map[/li][/ul]
Unfortunately, the Children’s Museum of Manhattan trip appears to be suffering from a lack of interest. For those with kids, the Natural History Museum is great, too.

Saturday, January 4: The MegaDopefest Dinner

The MegaDopefest Dinner will return to America Restaurant on Saturday, January 4, 2003 at 6:30 p.m.

America, 9 East 18th Street
New York, NY 10003, (212) 505-2110. 18th Street between Broadway and Fifth. 4/5/6, N/R/Q/W or L trains to 14th Street/Union Square.

Reservation for “Cecil Adams” party. According to the restaurant, it is handicapped accessible.

Following the Dinner, we will adjourn around the corner to the No Idea Bar. 30 East 20th Street between Park and Broadway, Official Link, where we have the back room reserved. No Idea is handicapped accessible. Dopers under 21 planning to attend, please e-mail me.

Sunday, January 5: Billdo’s Bagel Brunch

On Sunday, January 5, from 11:00 to 2:00, we will see how many people we can stuff into a one-bedroom apartment on the Upper West Side of Manhattan at Billdo’s Bagel Brunch. There will be bagels with all the trimmings and plentiful coffee and juice. My apartment is hung-over accessible (and we can get a ramp for the few steps in the lobby, if necessary). If you’re planning to attend, please post here so I may send you directions and have sufficient food. (If your e-mail isn’t listed, please e-mail me.) Parking Map

Travel Arrangements:

For those flying in, we recommend you use LaGuardia, Kennedy or Newark airports. Airport information, including ground and public transportation options, is available here.

Intercity rail service is available through Amtrak to New York’s Penn Station. Commuter rail service is available through Long Island Rail Road, Metro-North and New Jersey Transit. Bus service is available to the Port Authority Bus Terminal.

People have mentioned they’re staying at the Hotel Olcott, 27 West 72nd Street, (212) 877-4200; Hotel Wolcott, 4 West 31st Street, (212) 268-2900; and Red Roof Inn Manhattan, 6 West 32nd Street, (212) 643-7100.

Once in the City, you can get around by New York City Transit buses and subways.

Folks, please remember that is New York City, with big city prices here. If you come into the City with just a few bucks in your wallet, it won’t stretch far, much less through a whole weekend. Also, we have an 8-1/4% sales tax and tipping is an important additional cost on the price of food and drinks here. America will include a 18% gratuity on the bill, and that’s about the standard percentage tip here. We’ve had problems with some that didn’t realize this before, and we don’t want to have similar problems this year.

Parking maps linked to above.

Brunch Update,

I’ve changed my mind about e-mailing everyone with details of my brunch. I’ll have directions to my apartment with me during the Dopefest to hand out. If you want them, find me and ask me. If you’re not sure you’ll run into me, e-mail me and I’ll send them.

Bill

Re: the subway art tour (there’s art in the NYC subway? yeah, OK.) - matt_mcl and I were at dinner a couple of weeks ago and naturally he expressed interest in touring the subway, and asked me if I wanted to, and being somewhat of a metrophile myself, I’d like that. And we’d get to meet OxyMoron.

Greenbeen, what day will you have beansprout there?
How old is beansprout? Just wondering if I should bring jerseydiamondchip

Anybody want to volunteer to babysit me, especially if Vince doesn’t come? (Y’know, meet me at the train station and help make sure that I remember to get BACK to the train station, and keep me from being lost. Never having been in a big city before, I fear getting lost in the concrete maze.)

Rainchikki it would be my homor to make aure you get back to the station on Sunday

Myself and a guest will be at dinner on Saturday.

Checking in…

I plan on attending the Saturday main event for certain, with a non-doper guest in tow. Try not to frighten the poor child too much–you know, all those veiled references to the “unofficial” black mass/midnight orgy/virgin sacrifice event.

We may be able to make it to the bar Friday night, too. (The current idea is to go see Rent that night, then try to hook up with you guys after… 11-ish.)

MannyL, you’re a gentleman and a scallop.

Billdo, howinthehell are you gonna fit 42 people?

JerseyDiamond, the Sprout is an infink. Not even a year old, and not only that, he doesn’t have his driver’s license.

Hamadryad, Weirddave, Gingy, did the PATH site help? I hope so.

I am so incredibly stoked, I’m answering other people’s posts.

I’ll be there for all the Saturday stuff. I love me some Dim Sum.

beerchick checking in:
I will be at the thurs eve korean dinner,Fri nite bar event, and the Sat eve dinner and drinking fest. I strongly doubt I will make any daytime events since I don’t like the daylight.

Officially Checking In. I will not be attending Thursday dinner. I will be attending Friday, and of course Saturday Dim Sum and so forth, and America, and (assuming I’m not hung over) the Bagel Brunch.

Cheers,

Christian.

Assuming a lot there, Oxy.

We shall drag his butt there, Gorgon. Never underestimate the sheer force of will that a Canadian can eminate after a night of drinking.

More on the Art of the Subways tour:

Although it’s of course subject to weather, the whims of the leader (ahem) and audience requests, the preliminary tour will start near the Dim Sum restaurant at Canal Street, for an introduction to old and new mosaics. We’ll proceed to Wall Street on the 4/5 (best preserved of the old stations, lots of marble and well-preserved wood), then take a brief above-ground walk to Park Place/Chambers Street for the marvelous Oculus mosaic. From Chambers Street we’ll take the A/C/E to 14 th street to tour the new, wonderfully funny sculptures by Tom Otterness.

Finally, we’ll walk underground from the Port Authority to Times Square, via a tunnel with a sort of text-art, Burma Shave takeoff hanging above by artist Norman Colp.

Times Square is home to a trifecta of great art, by Jack Beal, url=“http://www.mta.info/mta/aft/tour/42stnn.htm”]Jacob Lawrence, and Roy Lichtenstein.

What PATH site? I haven’t been following the thread. I know my way around NYC-although deciding to walk across upper Manhattan from the east side to the west side while blindingly drunk at 3 AM last year was NOT the best decision of my life!

Ginger, I thank you. I had always wondered about Canadian euphmisms for gas.

I, and every last cent to my name, will be arriving in the city somewhere on Friday afternoon, by car. At which point I plan to get hopelessly lost in Manhattan – scream obscenities at my myself, my car and the public in general – run for my life from some one I’ve pissed off – and then miraculously bump into someone I know and party like it’s 1999.

I have no idea where I’m staying, but there was a rumor of a hotel room to share, complete with pillow fight.

I will then be leaving some time on Sunday afternoon, so as I can get back to Maine sometime before midnight (that’s when I turn into a kumquat) – I’m figuring on about a six hour drive, so, at the latest, I’d want to leave at … ah fuck it … you do the math.

I’m up for any and all festivities that my meager budget will allow. Including drinking beer.
