Obama be shuckin' 'n' jivin', dontchyaknow!

Nah, she’d quit in 2 years because the job conflicted with her media needs.

If we ever needed evidence that you and reality aren’t on speaking terms…

This.

Sarah Palin isn’t a racist, she’s just (as her fellow traveler Ann Coulter would put it) a retard.

I can relate. Have some culturally tardo cousins in Texas, coming along a mite slowly. Not one of them considers himself a racist, would be insulted to hear it. I can hear them in my minds ear saying something like what’s wrong with “shuck and jive”, just another way of saying “bullshit”.

Mind, they have no objection to complexion. Its more like they see no good reason to extend themselves to being culturally sensitive. They know black people, sure, but they don’t spend a lot of time talking to them. So how would they know what to say, and what not to say?

You really are one stupid asshole, aren’t you.

Since when is Sarah Palin a human?

Seriously. I’m pretty sure that public figures who intentionally look for support from racists by using these kinds of tactics are not deserving of legal protections.

Seriously. She’s engaging in hate speech, and deserves a heavy fine, if not some jail time.

The public encouraging of racism, coming from a public figure, is equivalent to inciting violence, i.e., shouting “Fire!” in a crowded theater.

I love this shit.

Whenever a politician, or pseudo-politician in this case, makes an English spoken gaffe, it only shows how stupid and closed minded a person could be-- many of whom are elected to have a job. I’ll still blame an idiotic, religious sect influenced behavior for Sarah Whore Palin and her uneducated remarks. Should we “target” her now, or will a moose protect her?

Remember her “special blessing” ceremony she had to protect her from witches before her VP hopeful travels began? Her priest seemed to be doing more shucking’ and jivin’ to keep them witches away, though she still befriended O’Donnell.

Um… No… Let’s not get all “1984” here. She deserves being ridiculed in threads on discussion groups like this one, including being called rude names. Rather than make her a First Amendment martyr, let’s just quote her as widely as we can, in places where it might do some good. And laugh.

You forgot to include the future tense.

Obama-a shuck n jive. = Obama will shuck and jive very soon, or at a known point in time.

Obama gonna be shuckin n jivin. = Obama will shuck and jive at an indeterminate point in the future.

Also, past tense can be emphasized with “done.” Depending on placement it can emphasize different things.

I’d never heard this expression before this article came out.

My 30-something cousin was raised in Alaska, and still lives there. She is very smart, well read, went to college in the Northeast US, has traveled the world, and even lived in Mexico. Yet, when we recently visited Harlem (New York City) together, I was reminded of how she doesn’t have much experience at all with black culture, real black people, or (I’d imagine) with certain not-very-common phrases which are or were associated with blacks.

So, it may really be that Gov. Palin was unfamiliar with the connotations of the phrase. Her speechwriters/handlers must have been, however, so I’m not excusing the incident, mind you.

As to the issue I had heard the expression; it had never occurred to me it was racist. I had always heard it in a racially neutral sense. Usually applied to white people, actually.

It’s not racist per se. It is, to Americans, highly associated with African-Americans and slaves in particular. There is no doubt that the use of the term was intentional and just one more example of race-baiting from high level Republicans and it is disgusting.

Palin is too stupid to have come up with that on her own. Knowing the nuance of "shuckin’ and jivin’ would have involved having read something at some point. More likely it went like this with her speechwriters:

“Governor (heh heh) Palin, here’s a public statement we think you should make.”
“Why?”
“Because it fits with your, um, straight shootin’ no-nonsense mavericky ‘brand.’ It will make the liberals scream.”
“Why’s that?”
“Does it matter?”

Obviously I’ve had to add two extra ‘whys’ for the purpose of exposition, but that’s more or less how it probably went down.

The phrase, by itself in a vacuum, isn’t racist. The fact that there’s zero chance Sarah Palin would have said it about a white president is racist as hell.

And I think that, until today, she may very well have been that ignorant. Fact is, if she had said it about a white politician, I would neither notice nor care.

Unless she’s secretly part Black. Then it would be OK.

I have, on several occasions in my life, Shucked corn.
I am, however, perilously short on Jive.

I didn’t think that the office of the VP offered the opportunity to be a damn sight better than a rock.
