Obama's "ultimate nerd sin"

And here I thought he was a Trekker! Newsweek in late 2008 reported that he’d complimented Michelle for a sparkly belt buckle and joked that it must be made of dilithium crystals.

Everyone has a bad day now and then, I suppose…

Ceti eel worked better for Khan. He did lose in the end but that was because he was an asshole, the parasite did it’s job. Good parasite.

National Public Rdio did a piece on this Friday, even going so far as to explain the difference between a Jedi Mind Trick and a Vulcan Mind Meld, using audio clips from Star Wars and Star Trek.

It’s a great “soft news” story, but what it reeally tells me is that, since just about everyone seems to know about this and understand the error, there’s really a little bit of nerd in everyone. They ain’t foolin’ anyone – they watched Star Wars and Star Trek.

He wasn’t wrong. His Star Wars nerdness just goes deeper than the six movies.

Oh, so that’s where that originated? I had encountered it out of context.

In any event, it’s funny, and that makes up for a lot.

It’s Trekkie, isn’t it?

Fark had a completely hilarious thread of mixed nerd references. It was full of stuff like this.

Yes and no, which is what makes it funny. The Jedi (and Jedi Mind Trick) are from Star Wars, while the Vulcan Mind Meld is from Star Trek.

The ultimate nerd sin would be calling it “Star Track” which I still hear occasionally.

Don’t open *that *can of worms!

Maybe I’m getting whooshed here, but Obama didn’t say “Jedi Meld”. He said “Jedi Mind Meld”. As unimportant as it is, the president did get it wrong.

This is not the phrase you are looking for.

Obama clearly needs a nerd on his communications staff whose job will be to insert accurately nerdy jokes into his speeches.

I guess I volunteer.

You did click on the link in the OP, right? :dubious:

Now see, what I’d like to know is why anyone still uses the term “mind trick”. That’s not what it’s supposed to be called; it’s just some street term Jabba made up. ("You weak-minded fool! He’s using an old Jedi mind-trick on you!) The correct term is “Force Persuasion”. Any of the books that deal with Jedi mind powers calls it thus, and I’m pretty sure it’s in at least one of the games as well.

Just thought it needed to be said. Nothing serious.

Obama is no true nerd. He’s a cool cat at heart. He was bound to trip up on this kind of stuff.

They might get more signatures on that petition if they could spell “canon” correctly.

Some of us prefer the terms “Trekker” and “Trekfan.”

Bill Maher: these jackasses know about every language on every planet except the real one.

Or Doctor Spock.
