Obscure Star Wars question - Emperor's blob

Ok, I’ve seen Return of the Jedi a few times from a few different versions (tv, different VHS versions) and in the end, the Emperor is doing all his lines at Luke (“You want this, don’t you?” et. al.) and in it, he has this black blob floating next to his right eye. It’s on the robe, and it’s very prominent. In fact, it’s pretty damn distracting. Anyone know what the deal is with that?

You might want to try posting this in Cafe Society, lots of SW fans there.

Just don’t confuse it with David Spade, who played the Emperor’s new blob.

They were matted on to hide an unsightly lighting effect that they decided they didn’t like. It never showed up on film, but was kind of obvious on video.
