Obscure Vietnam-era song ID

A colleague is asking anyone and everyone to help him ID and possibly find the lyrics for a song he heard, once upon a time.

It’s a story song, either Vietnam-era or recorded later about Vietnam. The gist of the story is that a soldier found himself alone, cut off from his platoon and lost in the jungle. He hunkered down in a foxhole. Sometime through the night, another soldier who called himself Camouflage showed up and led the lost soldier out of the jungle. When the rescued soldier, back at base, turned around to thank Camouflage, he’d disappeared. Later investigations revealed that Camouflage was in fact ::spooky music:: a ghost.

Anyone know the song title/artist? I was thinking ‘Camouflage’ by Country Joe and the Fish, but I can’t find lyrics anywhere to confirm or deny.

Here are the lyrics.

Haj

As you can see it’s a 1986 Stan Ridgeway song.

Haj

That’s the one, Haj! Thank you very much.

You realize it’s a modified version of the UL found in the song “Laurie (Strange Things Happen)”, don’t you?:

And James Michener wrote a similar kinda story in The Shepherd (least I think it was The Shepherd). That sort of story has been around for a looong time.
