I have recently beaten The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask. While the game was definitely cool, it just didn’t have the impact of the first. The graphics and play control were virtually identical so I’m basing this on other aspects.
-OT had a much better and epic storyline. The moon crashing to earth only does so much for me. Majora as the main boss is WEAK. OT also had Zelda in it. (Don’t mention to me the short cameo Zelda had in Majora’s Mask. It was a memory and not relevant to the actual story.)
-Both had time travel but OT was still linear. MM takes credit for strictly staying within 3 days and having to warp back to the first day constantly. Truely a new experience for me.
-MM ending sucks while OT was decent.
-MM does get credit for creating new personas for link to use. Learning their abilities and switching between them was fun. OT kept Link but the young and old versions were interesting.
-OT seemed longer. The gameplay might have been the same but OT had 9 important dungeons with big bosses to play. MM only has 4 (5 if you do all the side quests in the moon). MM took up the time on more side quests such as the notebook.
There are many other differences to describe and argue about but I’ll leave it up to you, the faithful at SDMB.
(I do love MM, but OT rocked while MM was merely great. MM does get bonus points for some originality though.)
Majora’s Mask doesn’t seem to have that “zing”, that Ocarina of Time did when I first started playing it. I give the prize to Ocarina of Time. I just hate the fact that you have to travel back and forth between the first and final days.

I’ve heard this from many people. While it can get annoying at times, it does add an urgency to your actions and play. Later on when sunlight becomes important, it no longer is an easy shift between night and day like the Ocarina of Time. The circular time is a new monster that was interesting to deal with. I don’t want all my games like it, but it does provide a refreshing idea when so many video games are thrown together formulaically.
I think Majora’s Mask biggest drawback is that it lacks the emotional impact and storytelling of the first.

I haven’t finished Majorca’s Mask yet. Not as good as the Ocarina of Time then again, I don’t believe it was ever intended to rival that one. It’s just a side quest game for those who couldn’t get enough of Ocarina of Time.
Anyway, my complaint is that I can’t get through the dungeons and get all the fairies all in one go. I have to explore solve everything, and by the time I’m on the end guy, it’s time to go back in time. So then I have to do everything all over again. Of course since I know how to do it, I just zip through, but it’s annoying anyway…
I love OT and just got MM for the birthday, but funny thing is I haven’t played it yet. But that’s okay because I have finals next week and I should probably concentrate on them than Zelda.
