Odd Object in Ottawa, ON, Canada

I haven’t visited Ottawa since the 1970’s, but I recall seeing the changing of the guard outside the Parliament building. Just outside the gate of the main entrance, as I recall, there was a low, octagonal, fountain-like structure into which people would toss coins. It wasn’t a fountain, really. It had a brass plaque of some kind set back from the public by a mini, moatlike pond giving protection. At the center, there was a flame. Could this have been a memorial to the Canadian unknown soldier? I assume this is still there today…

Any Canadian SDopers know what this was? Thanks!

That’s our eternal flame.

I don’t know much else about it except that it’s good for tossing pennies into.

It was built to celebrate our centennial in 1967 and the flame is surrounded by the shields of the Canadian provinces and territories (though I need to check and see if Nunavut is there now). It also has the dates the province or territory joined Confederation.
