Odd smells you love.

Not much I can say to introduce this, so I’ll start things off with my entry:

Atrophied skin.

When I was a kid, in the 40’s, my parents, and I, would occasionally got to a local swimming hole w/ a picnic lunch. Mom would always bring a bar of Ivory soap so we could bathe before leaving. Everytime I smell Ivory soap I think of those fun summer days.

I don’t know that everyone will think this odd, because I know many others that love the smell too, but just as many that wrinkle their noses up and go ewwwww:

I love, love LOVE the smell of horses. That mixture of sweat , leather, hay & manure. It is my favorite smell in the world.

I also don’t mind the smell of skunk , in small doses.

Roof/road tar (if it’s not too strong) and the smell of diesel exhaust from a big truck. BECAUSE… when I was a little kid, my dad (civil engineer then) would sometimes bring me on site to a road construction he was overseeing and the guys there would let me ride with them on the dump trucks and steam rollers and various bulldozers.

I also learned to huck a loogie from these guys but it took a few years of practice to get it just right.

Creosote. Maybe a nostalgia thing…I dunno.

Mmmm . . . agree with roof tar and diesel smoke. The love of diesel is from riding with my dad, a long haul trucker, on long trips.

My favorite? Tire stores – yummy! I also love my new Neutrogena dandruff shampoo that has “coal tar” or something ominous in it.

Smell of dust in the air and…well…strong smell of animals. Why?

Reminds me of India. NOT because, let me hasten to assure you, that all of India smells like a pigsty. Just a lot of it. :stuck_out_tongue:

Insulin. My brother is diabetic and i get to smell it all the time… mmm.

I only love the smell of diesel now because we own a Volkswagen TDI…but I’ve always loved the smell of gasoline at a filling station. I still prefer it to diesel coming from the pump.

However, if we’re talking exhaust fumes, biodiesel made from veggie oil is the best. Fuel with a subtle hint of french fries – mmm MMM!

Not to hijack, but is that working out well for you? I’ve been thinking about getting myself some.

I also agree with road/roof tar, creosote, and horses, and will add hot asphalt, auto exhaust, cows, low tide, chrysanthemums, and the unmistakeable scent of a bear.

Pine-Sol (no other brand, only the real thing). It’s my favorite smell in the whole world. Especially when I’m pregnant.

Napalm in the morning.

The orange Mr. Sketch Scented Marker. Never cared for the other colors, but the orange one was like brightly colored crack to me when I was a kid.

Regular gas, back when it used to have lead in it. Unleaded just doesn’t do it for me.

I’m another one who enjoys the smell of horses and extremely diluted skunk.

A beloved old cat of my Mom’s that I grew up with, who died a few years ago, smelled sooooo good. One of her many nicknames was Ozone Kitty. Not that I really know what ozone smells like, as I’ve never been that close to a lightening strike, but she smelled amazingly “fresh”. She spent most of her time outside in the relatively pristine Northern California forests that surrounded our house.

Woodsmoke.

Sautted garlic and butter, but that isn’t odd. Anyone who doesn’t love the smell of it is odd.

A high quality sandalwood oil will have me trying to crawl into your clothes. Cheap, sweet-smelling immitations will have me trying to throw up into your clothes.

This goes back a long time, but in elementary school I loved the smell of mimeographed sheets. The dark purplish ink was one of my favorite colors, also.

There is NOTHING like the smell of a brand new box of Crayola crayons.

<swoon>

Cheap imitations will not do. Only the original Crayola brand.

Oh, and PlayDoh. I love the smell of it as well as the taste of it on my tongue. I don’t eat the stuff, mind you, but the sensation it gives when you put your tongue on it is very cool.

I have Dandruff, and very flakey, oily skin on and behind my ears. I usually use Head and Shoulders extra strength (the blue bottle), but once in a while it gets really bad and I have to use the amber, tarry smelling Neutrogena. It works within a day or so to clear it up. I highly reccommend it.

I tried the clear kind of Neutrogena dandruff shampoo once, and it didn’t do jack. Regular H&S doesn’t do much for me either.

Oh, and I love the smell of it.

I, too, love the smell of freshly printed mimeograph sheets when they were popular. Now, I love the smell of 90% ethanol (we use it for cleaning after setting up a PCR run), the smell of new carpeting, wood smoke from a fire, sauteed onions and garlic amd freshly peeled tangerine skin.
