You know who you are. You’re the ones who are still in high school or college. That’s how I define “young”.
But I don’t know who you are, and that’s what makes you all so wonderful.
Take a look around you. People are posting on all subjects. The posts here are routinely among the most intelligent I’ve ever seen. There are bona fide experts in their fields posting here about their experiences and their technical knowledge.
But what I absolutely do not see are posts that scream immaturity, that are glaring in their stupidity.
This means that those of you who are young enough to be my…well, my much younger siblings are just as thoughtful and entertaining as your older fellow posters. I know, you’re probably thinking that of course you’re just as thoughtful and entertaining! “We’re people too, dammit!” you scold.
But that’s just what I’m saying. You don’t stick out like the proverbial sore thumb, as many young people on other message boards (yes, they exist) do. Or, for that matter, any young people among adults. You are, in my mind, wise beyond your years, and I think that speaks volumes of your character.
I don’t know who exactly is “young” (okay, I might know a couple offhand). But I do want to let you know how much I appreciate you and your contribution to this message board.
If nothing else, it’s my fervent wish that this thread encourages those of you who are “young” to post more often. I know that this place can seem intimidating to anyone new, whether they’re grizzled old fellas like me or fresh out of the womb. But you have a voice! Use it, and use it wisely. People won’t laugh at you for your ideals, and if they do, stick by them and they’ll laugh with you.
This is a wonderful place to gain perspective, and I think there are some of us - maybe more than just some - who could learn an awful lot from your postings.
What brought this unexpected kindness along? Not that you aren’t kind and wonderful in the first place. grin
This little high school junior wishes others were as considerate as you are. And what you said about gaining perspective was very true. Kerrigan! Yikes! You ARE young! How did you stumble onto the boards? Just curious…I felt stunningly out-of-place when I found my way here, and I’ve got a couple of years on you! (Not that you aren’t welcome-quite the opposite.)
Maybe all of us younguns ought to unite. Oooh! A Dopefest for minors only! Sweeet…
Sometimes I do feel scared to post, maily because I’m nowhere near as smart as everyone on here. I don’t want to make stupid mistakes that make everyone say, “Geez, I thought everyone knew that!” It’s hard to want to contribute when the fear of being wrong and getting ridiculed for it is present. Also, I don’t know if things I say are too “immature” and make my fellow Dopers say, “Grow up and get a life!”
<Sigh> I guess I’ll always have this fear, but thank you for noticing!
Now enough of my whining…
For dan’s a mighty good fellow
For dan’s a mighty good fellow
For dan’s a mighty good fellow
Which nobody can deny!
