I think this is a really good point. The problem is we can’t stoop to pandering to xenophobia and racism like the GOP has. And we’re kind of shitty if we have a platform that doesn’t acknowledge the needs of minorities, but so many people fly off the fucking handle if you even mention that women and people of color are at a decided disadvantage in this country. White conservative voters tend to see equality as a zero sum game. So where do Dems go from here?

You’re right about that. I’ll take Trump over ANY of the other republican candidates. They really scared me. Trump is merely incompetent and probably isn’t capable of accomplishing much more than tanking the economy, driving up unemployment, screwing the environment and returning health insurance premiums soaring through the roof. That was a given with any Repub.
Partly true, Bernie-ites and Trump’s core supporters are both protectionist, though some of both groups have trouble admitting they agree on anything. But the left welcomes an apparently unlimited rise in the % of foreign born people in the country, which is more to the heart of what makes people feel like strangers in their own country. See also Brexit, and see the US in the 1920’s after the last peak in the foreign born population.
Call that difference ‘enlightenment’ on the left and ‘racism’ on the right if you like. Many might see it instead as opportunism of left leaning politicians wanting to let in more people they think will vote for them. And non-racists might still might ask what concrete benefit mass immigration brings to them, and why they have to vote for it if there isn’t a clear answer. But the moralizing either way is secondary. Immigration is a part of globalization where Bernie’s and Trump’s core supporters don’t agree at all.
And second a lot of Bernie-ites are anti-capitalist, not just anti-globalist. The US mainstream still is not. The core Trumpists are not free market conservatives, that’s a different smaller group of Republican voters who might have thought Trump less bad than Clinton, but didn’t really like him either. But even the core Trumpists aren’t nearly as hostile to capitalism as most of Bernie’s core.
That’s not ‘blaming’ either group, or not intended to. But the agreement of left and right wing populists on trade protectionism is not really that major an agreement.
This is not your fault America. The world has been skewing right (see Brexit, xenophobia on the rise in Europe, the acceptance of far-right parties in Europe and Australia as well) in recent years…you guys have just jumped on the bandwagon.
But to be honest, I expected better of you. I’ve always looked UP to you, America, as a guiding light. And now you have succumbed to the same fear-mongering as much of the rest of the western world.
I am just shell-shocked now. I wish you luck…AND the rest of the world as well.

‘Merely incompetent’ does not compute for me. Nothing scares me more in a civic leader than incompetence, especially an official with such a huge impact on foreign policy and national security. Not the racism, the xenophobia, the misogyny, the lies, the megalomania, nothing is more of a threat than incompetence.
That makes no sense. You could have just as easily said he voted for Clinton and been equally correct.
