I finally had it figured out. Australia has kangaroos. Austria doesn’t.
Just when I thought I understood this, my world view is turned upside down yet again.
I bought one of those T-shirts when I was in Vienna a couple of years ago. Perhaps I should ask for my money back now on the grounds of misleading advertising.
You think you’ve got it tough? Try speaking French and getting Austria (Autriche) mixed up with ostrich (autruche) all the time. To make things worse, Austria’s name for itself is Osterreich, which sounds like ostrich if you pronounce it like a non-German-speaker.
One of those names just has to change.
