… at least according to Michigan State Rep. William Callahan. (Source )
Callahan is running against incumbent Replublican Sander Levin for a seat in Congress this fall. Callahan asserted that Levin is too different from the district to effectively represent them. How so? Well, according to Callahan:
Callahan has apologized for the “Christmas tree” remark. However, he still maintains that he is able to better represent the people of Macomb County better than Levin because:
How rich it is that a Roman Catholic would say such a thing! Hell, how can he represent the good folks of Macomb County when we all know that the Catholics take their orders straight from the Pope, who is going to come over and forcibly convert all the innocent Protestant kids to Papists!
I hop the voters of your district throw the bum out come election time.
Well, ZEV, there are all sorts of code words for anti-Semitism but “he doesn’t even own a Christmas tree” has got to get some points for inventiveness.
As I think about it, your jerk might fit in very well with the likes of the Rep from Texas who doesn’t want people to send their kids to the state universities because un-Christian ideas are advanced there, and my guy who is campaigning on the basis of never having driven a Mercedes.
I suspect that other Dopers can, and will, contribute there own campaign rhetoric horror stories. I hope that you aren’t going to vote for this slow leak.
On behalf of Michiganians let me express my dismay at Callahan’s numbingly stupid and bigoted remarks. I saw them in a local newspaper a few days ago, and couldn’t believe a person in elective office (you know, where you’re supposed to kinda at least feign representing people across the gamete?) could say something like that.
He should be sentenced to Adam Sandler’s “Hannukah Song” blasted into his home in a loop at 110 decibels for the entire month of December annually, sorta like what we did when we captured Manuel Noriega in Panama.
Luckily, Callahan didn’t have much of a chance to begin with against Levin. Due to term limits in Michigan, there are two congressional races (the Kalamazoo-based 6th district being the other) in which termed out legislators are challenging congressional incumbents as a last hurrah. Levin wasn’t particularly weak, and he’s an intelligent guy who also has the strong family name going for him. Callahan’s just trying to avoid going into the private sector, where fuckwads such as himself don’t often find gainful employment.
Send Callahan down here to Alabama. Except for being Catholic and maybe a carpetbagger issue, with comments like that he’d be a favorite for any office he wants to run for.
Wait, Irish and Polish descent are considered positive attributes to run on these days? Christ, there goes my street cred. Give me the good old days when you had to be a lantern-jawed Mayflower scion to reach the halls of power, and I still had some working-class cachet.
“Very much pro-choice and Hebrew”? Anachronistic fuckstain.
He doesn’t want to be in the halls of power, just the House or Representatives. Southern Macomb County is heavily Catholic with many ties to the Polish and Italian immigrants of not too far back (and the Irish and Germans dominated Detroit before the Poles and Italians showed up).
My face re: missing which Mr. Levin you were speaking of. I’d heard the story on the news and it only referred to “Mr. Levin”, but that’s no excuse for missing the “Sandar” vs. “Carl” in your OP.
:smack:
But, on the bright side, 'cause I live in MI, I know how to correctly pronounce both Sault St. Marie and Mackinaw.
