Oh the Irony

One more thing that’s frowned upon here, which the above post almost perfectly demonstrates (in the guise of being “helpful”): no Junior Modding.

Now there’s some actual irony for ya.

Not according to the rules:

Giving advise =/= chastising.

Oakminster wasn’t chastising anybody

Say again?

Obvious paraphrase of the mod position previously stated, which is routine practice in these threads. No junior modding intended or performed. Cynyc is perfectly free to disregard the advice given.

Oakminster wasn’t chastising anybody.

Would you care to attribute that quote?

Attribute it to what? Or to whom? Do you even know what the word means?

It’s routine practice in these threads for users to waltz in and threaten other users with bannings? Really? Huh.

Two mods already mentioned that the next warning for this behavior will result in banning. I made no threats, I merely repeated what the mods had already said. Quotes below, since you apparently missed them.

[Actual Moderating]

splatterpunk, knock it off. Oakminster’s post wasn’t junior moderating. Ironically enough, yours is.

How?

Yeah. This quote which you posted without attributing to anybody.

If you’re going to post someone’s quote, it’s good practice to note who posted it. So, who said it?

Anyway, I see a third mod confirmed that Oak wasn’t junior modding, so I needn’t reply anymore since your opinion has been invalidated.

You publicly accused Oakminster of a warnable rules violation, that is, junior moderating. If you felt his post was against the rules, you should have reported it and let the moderators handle it.

Oakminster’s post was not junior moderating. The subject of cynyc’s behavior was already on the table in this thread, and input from posters in this circumstance is OK. As he said, two moderators had already indicated that banning was a possibility, and he committed no offense by agreeing with that.

If you have some kind of beef with Oakminster, take it to the Pit. Don’t use this thread as an excuse to attack him here.

I did report it. Nothing happened.

He didn’t just “agree with” it. He threatened a user with a banning.

Yeah. Whatever.

Is this true? I thought you could tell someone to fuck off but not say “fuck you”.

Although I often confused on these things.

It’s true.

Restricted language in the Pit

IMO, it was a mistake for TPTB to get specific about which particular words/phrases are prohibited - because (as mentioned upthread) setting out specifics just makes it easier for people to violate the spirit of the law whilst upholding the letter.

For example, if it’s prohibited to say “Your father was a squirrel, and your mother smells of elderberries”, someone will just come along and say “your father was a chipmunk, and your mother smells of boysenberries”.

Then the rule will be adapted to “do not compare anyone’s father to any arboreal rodent, or the aroma of anyone’s mother to any kind of berry”, but this doesn’t stop people saying “your father was a meerkat, and your mother smells of apricots”…

So TPTB step in again and say “Look, just don’t compare anyone’s parents to small furry animals, or fruit, OK?”, but without breaking any rules, someone will say “your father was a pangolin, and your mother smells of rhubarb”… and so on.

The more finely you nuance the rules, the easier it is to dance rings around them, and the harder they are to interpret and enforce - easier just to say “don’t be an asshole”, because in all of the above hypotheticals, it’s obvious that the offender is being an asshole, and that the offender knows he’s being an asshole.

Being helpful != Jr Modding.

Being helpful and pointing things out (like navigating the board culture) is fine.

Jr Modding is trying to act as if you have the authority to enforce rules (not just explain rules to someone who is confused). Saying “your post broke this rule and you should stop” is jr modding. Saying “a type of post that is generally considered bad form or is against the rules would be blah blah” is not. IMHO.

Perhaps it would clarify things a bit to suggest (IMHO) that one difference between “Junior Modding” and Oakminster’s post is that “Junior Modding” is typically unsolicited criticism, whereas Oakminster was replying to repeated solicitations for clarification by the OP. If you keep asking “but how is it wrong?” someone is going to come along and tell you.

Thank you, sir, ignorance fought.
