I don’t think this is part of any pattern. The Republican Party rejected this guy and put no money into the campaign while the democrats put all their weight behind it. A lot of republicans stayed home because they couldn’t vote for him. It’s Alabama so when this short senate term is up it will go back to R if they put up anyone else.
I would also include Kamala Harris in this list.
I didn’t say it would be an overnight success. Treating them like adversaries won’t work at all. Getting an understanding of why they think like they do is a better alternative than constantly being in combat with them.
Let me try a different tack: did you ever experience a fundamental shift in opinion? Did a teacher, author, friend, SDMB, ever inspire you to change your outlook on life for the better? Did you ever discard the old way of thinking and discover something more beneficial? Was it done from constant shaming and fighting, or by positive reinforcement and encouragement? How can what changed your life change the way a racist thinks?
No, it’s not easy. But maybe Jones’s win will be the start.
I’m about 90% in agreement with you, Loach; for example, if “Big” Luther Strange had been running instead of Moore, he’d have won by 7-8 points, no problem (IMHO of course).
I will say that if Jones stays a moderate Democrat in his voting and if the Republicans/Trump manage to keep screwing up for three more years, it is barely possible that Jones could win in 2020–but those are two big ‘if’s’ and one very large ‘barely’ there.
Late in the game several Republicans, including Trump, campaigned for him. Granted it was half-hearted, but they did attempt to put their weight behind him.
Now that Moore-Jones is settled we need a new contest to watch. Personally I can’t decide between the dishonest authoritarian and the guy who uses the term “syndicalist collective” unironically - there’s just so much to root against on both sides. It’s like Trump-Sanders writ very small.
Also the RNC ended up sending him money after the initial storm had died down a bit and it looked like he could win. Maybe they didn’t send as much money as they otherwise would have, but they did send money.
Let’s never forget this part, from just a few days ago:
But did they send guns and lawyers?
As great as this was, I know that the only way Jones wins in 2020 is if Bannon, having somehow not reverted back to the puddle of slime that forms him, throws all his money into a candidate that openly says he wants to stab all the minorities, openly froths about literally crucifying Muslims, Jews and Atheists at the podium, and says the Bible & Jeebus are just fine with his 3rd marriage to a 13 year old cousin while said bride is openly in tears about the arrangement on stage.
Said Candidate still gets 80% of the white male vote in Alabama.
In all fairness, that 80% probably had trouble reading the ballot. They don’t know who they voted for.
I didn’t do extensive research but from what I read the big PAC money was not sent into the campaign. For a senate seat while there is a very small majority that is very telling.
I think you’ve totally under estimated the ability of trump to piss off Republicans. Give trump time and it will become the United Blue States of America.
LOL, “teen-loving Moore”.
“Accused sex predator Roy Moore, seen riding his steed Sassy to vote in Alabama on Tuesday, made a horse’s ass of himself by losing Senate race in a deep red state to Democrat Doug Jones.”
It just kind of noticed that I’ve never seen Trump hit back at the NY Daily News, probably the most blatant anti-Trump media outlet of them all. Hmmmm…
Damn, I so love NY papers.
Hell even the POST went for the “horse you rode in on” cover, too.
Roy Moore’s Horse is so relieved!
Here’s the cover for those interested, with the eyebrow headline (above the main) : “Perv Moore loses in Alabama.” Wow, even the right wing rags are getting in on it.
I agree, and I for one am glad that fascist, racist, dominionist, hypocrite, child molesting, son of a bitch lost.
I am especially pleased that the pundits are saying it was the black vote and women vote - especially black women - that led to his loss…
In a state where supposedly Dixie Repubs can’t lose.
May he choke on that.
I hope the stink of supporting a child molester like him hangs and lingers on the GOP for decades, if not forever.
Still, it’s pretty damning that the “race” was as close as it was. The fucker should have never had a shot.
