Exactly. Being nice to them doesn’t help. Ignoring them doesn’t help. Trying to educate them about the reasons they shouldn’t do racist things doesn’t help. Shooting them is illegal and wouldn’t help. They have not reasoned themselves into the position they are in but have arrived there by dint of petty-mindedness, hatred and fear, and will not be persuaded out of it by any means.

At least pointing out their racism has the virtue of being an honest approach.

Alabama is allowed to destroy digital voting records created at the polls during today’s U.S. Senate election after all.

At 1:36 p.m. Monday, a Montgomery County Circuit Court judge issued an order directing Alabama election officials to preserve all digital ballot images created at polling places across the state today.

But at 4:32 p.m. Monday, attorneys for Alabama Secretary of State John Merrill and Ed Packard, the state administrator of elections, filed an “emergency motion to stay” that order, which the state Supreme Court granted minutes after Merrill and Packard’s motion was filed.

By granting the stay, the court effectively told the state that it does not in fact have to preserve the digital ballot images - essentially digitized versions of the paper ballots voters fill out at the voting booth - created today.

The court will hold a hearing on Dec. 21 about whether to dismiss the case outright. By that point the state will have had ample time to destroy the digital ballot images legally under the stay…

Alabama’s top election official, Secretary of State John Merrill, just returned from an election monitoring mission in Russia, where he says the process he observed was “free and fair,” though the overall report on the election came back less glowing.

“They gave us these sheets,” he says, holding up pieces of paper with a small red box at the bottom, “But we didn’t have to fax them in. What we did, we had a pen. An electronic pen. We were able to touch this box . . . it would automatically send the information that was recorded to the central reporting location and they could document it live throughout the day.”

Merrill is back home now, preparing for the general election. He doesn’t expect to get changes in place that quick, but he says he does eventually hope to implement lessons learned from his trip to Russia.

So, a year+ ago, another GOPer just happened to be in Russia, noted their electronic notes system, said “we have to implement lessons learned”, now has digital voting… and yesterday he moved to have the digital votes erased.

Slightly off topic, but to those who keep positing that the southern US is more racist than any other region, this articleand map based on Google data shows a different story:

Interestingly, on the map above the most concentrated cluster of racist searches happened not in the South, but rather along the spine of the Appalachians running from Georgia all the way up to New York and southern Vermont. Other hotbeds of racist searches appear in areas of the Gulf Coast, Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, and a large portion of Ohio. But the searches get rarer the further West you go. West of Texas, no region falls into the “much more than average” category.

Racism is tough to measure, and Google’s methodology is not air tight. It’s based on web searches and only reflects racism against blacks. Regions in the west may show more racism if Hispanics or Native Americans were included, for instance.

For instance, by counting the number of known hate groups in each state, this articledetermines the top 5 most racist states are California, Florida, Texas, New York and Pennsylvania. So, not surprisingly, there are more hate groups in states with the largest populations. Put another way, these 5 states make up about a third of the US population and house about a third of US hate groups. Racism is everywhere people are.
