On the radio this morning (paraphrase): “I’d rather vote for a rapist than a murderer (abortion).”
Which makes some sense, actually.
So, I think Moore will win, because I’d rather vote for a rapist than a murderer as well. I mean, anyone who really believes in their heart of hearts that abortion is murder should probably vote the same, right?
I forget sometimes that “abortion == murder” is actually a real thing that real people believe (though, of course, they’re willing to commit murder themselves on occasion, and not out themselves).
Yeah, heard an interview on the radio with a representative from Concerned Women for America, and apparently this good ‘Christian’ group is far more concerned about “Abortion Jones” and his supposed agenda than they are about Moore’s activities with teenagers, his bigotry (which, let’s be honest, is music to the ears of groups like this), or his history of disgusting racist remarks.
If Jones didn’t look like he could win before, his defeat is all but guaranteed after Rosie O’Donnell announced she was contributing to his campaign. She’s about as popular in Alabama as Hillary with a gun magnet.
People from outside the South don’t understand it but the South still has a lot of this “us against them” mentality. The white conservative voters of Alabama know that Moore’s a piece of shit, but he’s their piece of shit. The more that people from the outside try to corner Alabama and shame them, the more shameless these people will become, the more defiant they will become, and the more determined they will be to vote - and to make sure that their enemies don’t vote.
Yeah, yeah… “I only voted for the racist child molester because you told me NOT to vote for the racist child molester!”
That ain’t actually on me that you sold your soul for the chance to be childish and petulant. Normal thinking people take their pieces of shit and flush them down the toilet rather than coddling and protecting them from scary outsiders out of spite.
If Hillary Clinton was caught in bed with a live girl and a dead boy who had proof positive that she personally murdered Vince Foster shoved into his asshole, I’d still vote for her over Trump. I get the feeling there’d be some legit discussion about it here as well and people would be a lot less dismissive compared to Roy Moore, because there is such a thing as scale. One nuclear strike can do more damage than an entire lifetime where every waking moment is spent raping children. You could do three every five minutes for 15 hours a day for your entire life and not hurt as many people as one psycho with a hydrogen bomb aimed at Shanghai.
There are lots of really great reasons to hate Roy Moore. And if the main thing you value is personal integrity and not being a sleazeball, hey, there’s another excellent reason to hate Roy Moore. And if republicans ever argue that we should value that again, then we have every right to point to Roy Moore and say, “Oh, really?” None of that makes MrDibble’s comments any less stupid, counterproductive, or nice-thing-destroying.
Some homophobic cactusfucker comes at me after being called on his pedantry, your “nice things” can get crammed in the spongy, spoogy cactus hole *he *just fucked. Along with your stupid head.
The legacy of slavery is alive and well in the South. Personally I look at the south like an abusive relationship on a society wide level.
Whites in the South as a class of people are very abusive, selfish and cruel (ask a racial, religious or cultural minority for references). But like many abusers, they are terrified their victims will get revenge. Or worse yet their victims will take over and treat them the same way they treat their victims. This deep seated terror of revenge causes further abuse and draconian control, resulting in more terror of their victims taking revenge. It is a downward spiral. Abuse leads to terror of revenge which leads to further abuse which leads to more terror of revenge.
Many abusers are over sensitive to anyone calling them abusers (in part because it forces them to admit how unethical they are), and many are terrified of their victims getting revenge.
The South, especially the deep south, represent this mentality on a society wide level. How the hell did the south ever become associated with morals and values? They are the opposite of moral. Their entire culture is based on abusing people, and fear of their abuse victims getting revenge. Maybe the south invented the myth that they are a moral culture to hide from the legacy of abuse and fear that truly defines their culture.
Moore may be a child abuser, but he will keep those terrifying minorities that tradcon whites have victimized and mistreated down so they can’t take revenge. He will also never call a spade a spade or admit southern values are evil.
It’s not just the south, it’s the redneck alt-right mentality with a generous dose of white supremacy mixed in. It was on full display last November, while millions of otherwise intelligent people, disgusted by the whole thing, stayed home and let misogynistic bigots take over the country. But the south does have them in special abundance.
So true. Non-southerners don’t understand that calling southerners names like racist won’t help. It just puts them on the defensive and strengthens their resolve. Churches are social centers, so most southerners will not want to risk breaking those bonds if they openly support progressive issues.
It’s possible for non-white non-conservatives to win every once in a while as long as they show themselves as “nice young people” who go to church, drink beer with the good ol’ boys, and avoid controversial issues. If elected officials can bring jobs and industry with a smiling face, their party affiliation won’t matter. That’s what Bill Clinton was good at.
White southerners - not all but the type who vote for Moore - inherited their parents paranoia of black people and their fears that once black people take political and economic power, they will exact vengeance. But it’s more complex than that. If whites would have said “You know what, that slavery thing, taking your great grandparents and selling them down the river and permanently separating them from your great great grandparents? Yeah, we gotta admit, that was kinda fucked up - we’re sorry about that,” most blacks would have moved on if whites had just committed to creating a fairer and more economically equitable and stable society without race. But people have to understand that capitalism in America, and especially capitalism in the American South, is inextricably tied to race. There is inexorable tie between race and economic class in the South, and while there’s no slavery, a lot of that thinking survived past Reconstruction, past Jim Crow, and past the Civil Rights movement. A lot of Southern whites still have to be ‘better’ than blacks. How they compare to a black family is how they judge themselves and how they measure their own success as people. For many whites, it’s unbearable to know that a black family is doing better than they are, and there must be some unnatural big government hand in it. The people who vote for Roy Moore don’t just fear blacks; they fear them with good reason, because they still want to hurt and debase them and blacks know it all too well.
