The EU is canon! I agree the people familiar with it are outnumbered in orders of magnitude by those who aren’t, but officially, it is canon.

It’s a lower tier of canon, though.

Of course. Tongue in cheek, and all that. Aside from togues in cheek, however, you’ve got to admit that the Romans, who were famous for good government, were far mroe high-handed. On a population-per-population basis, they were much more brutal. And the EU doesn’t exactly paint a pretty picture of the galaxy sans Emperor.

In fact, I got the impression that Palpatine’s black soul was basically laughing his ass off at the universe, because while he was a bastard and a half, he was still way better than most real-world tyrants of the 20th century, AND actually did provide economic growth while evidently not giving a damn about what most people did as long as they didn’t try to rebel against his political domination. Hell, he even left most local government alone.

It’s actually kind of sad, but as near as I can tell, the worst things he did as Evil Overlord boil down to, “I tolerate a lot of speciesism because I don’t care enough to spot it, and I murder ther shit out of anyone who opposes me.” Yup, the fictional Evil Overlord is actually very preferable to many real-world rulers, some of whom are considered halfway decent.

He overthrew most local governments (ignored Tatooine, due to a “hands off the Hutt Crimelords” policy).

During the Republic, only the Hutts got away with open slavery. Palpatine legalized it.

Massive censorship & destruction of “impure” artworks & music, via COMPNOR.

This theory does seem to be born out in the Expanded Universe. I can’t remember which series it is, but there is some philosophical discussion where it is mentioned that the old Jedi Order had tipped the balance of the Force way too far to the light side. Vader and Palpatine brought balance by basically destroying the old order.

Common misconception. “Balance in the Force” doesn’t refer to a balance between the dark and light sides. The light side itself refers to a way of practicing use of the Force that is “in balance.”

If the old order needed to be cleansed it would have been for reasons similar to those presented in the KOTOR games: The old fools running the Order aren’t staying as true to the path as they think and have become arrogant and set in their ways. It’s not that they’re swinging the Force too far towards the light or something. That’d be like saying “The Force is too balanced! We must balance it with unbalance.”
