I’m not sure If it is worth buying or not. Anyone have a review on the Directors cut that has come out? And I’m refering to personal reviews not links to DVD review sites
I haven’t watched any of the extras yet, just the movie. As for the Director’s Cut it seems that
all that was added was the few scenes which showed that young man in engineering who was Scotty’s sister’s son. Everything else seems to be the same.
It’s the only Trek movie I’d even consider buying on DVD, so I’ll proably pick it up sooner or later, even there isn’t any footage I haven’t seen already.
I’m hoping the extras will be interesting in and of themselves. I heard there’s an easter egg. If you click on Ricardo Montalban’s chest, you get a 10-minute workout video.
You have to see the suit Leonard Nimoy wore for an interview in 1982. Frightening. Very very frightening.
Bryan, if you’re ever in Charlotte, look me up. I’ll happily buy you a beer as payment for all the times I’m planning on stealing that line.
As to the OP, the Director’s Edition of Wrath of Khan is so good, if I hadn’t had a DVD player before, I’d have bought one for this.
Good enough?
Despite what Nicholas Meyer says, THAT IS NOT RICARDO’S REAL CHEST!!
There. Now having said that, I like the DVD.
Neat story about the configuration of the Reliant, too.
Can someone tell me whether in the DVD version, Khan’s final speech refers to “perdition” or to “hell”? I loved the speech in the movie, because the concept of Kahn cursing Kirk from perdition just seemed to resonate so much better. But in my VHS and in all the TV version’s I’ve seen, it was replaced with “hell.” Not quite the same, but I guess the producers thought no one would’ve understood it.
THAT’S ALL MONTALBAHN BABY!!!
Mostly a few extended scenes. More of the argument between Spock and McCoy about Genesis. A crewman convincing Kirk that the Enterprise is ready to go to space right then. Just a few other small things, nothing major.
That’s Montalban’s chest. The man is huge. Have a look at this photo of him in his white suit from ‘Fantasy Island’: http://us.imdb.com/EGallery?source=mptv&group=1059&photo=9737-0002.jpg&path=pgallery&path_key=Montalban,+Ricardo
Schwartzenegger can’t fill out a suit like that these days. Montalban was clearly a body builder at some point in his life. Here’s a picture of him from the 50’s: http://www.briansdriveintheater.com/beefcake/ricardomontalban/ricardomontalban14.jpg
He got bigger after that. And here’s a picture of him as Khan: http://www.briansdriveintheater.com/beefcake/ricardomontalban/ricardomontalban9.jpg
Same guy, same chest.*
*Not that I have a fixation with Montalban, healthy or otherwise. And I’m firmly hetero. But I never understood the claim that Montalban’s chest had to be a prosthesis.
I went out and bought it Saturday. There are a few minor changes and 'm sure a differnet take that even Okuda missed in his text commentary.
I love it, it looks better than teh previous version. I like seeing Scotty getting even more lines in during the scene in sickbay.
I Listened to the Commentary and found it interesting even if it gave no more real triva about the film itself. The Text commentary was equally as good for getting the nit picky details.
Nimoy What the hell were you thinking with that suit?!?!
I’m still unsure about the chest thing. It just did not seem to move in any way that seemed like it was part of him and that necklace of his seemed to be pasted on as if to cover the seam between a rubber chest and Montalban.
Got it from Amazon, along with Simpsons Season 2 and LOTR. Will be watching it tonight.
Khannnnnnnnn!
It just doesn’t look natural. No detail, no texture. I’ve seen him in movies from the 50’s (when he usually played a Hispanic or Native American) and he looked pretty ripped then. Of course, no one mentions his David Bowie-like “Aladdin Sane” haircut.
I think that was too obvious for anyone to mention or even question whether it was real or not, unlike Shatner’s toup…
The chest is open to debate due to the fact the director adamantly declares it is real when it looks fake to some.
“What are ya gonna do, when Ricardo Montalban gets his 24 Inch Pythons on you!!”
Cough- **Sam Stone **, despite your disclaimer you do seem to have alot of knowledge of ole Richardo’s chest. I am not sayin’-- I am just sayin’ . . . .
“Quien es mas macho?”
“Montalbaaaaannnnnnnnn!”
I’m watching the extra’s on disc two right now, and there’s some drooling geek boy in the “Star Trek Universe” section talking about his job working for Pocket, etc., etc. Guy claims to be an obsessed fan, and then he goes and says, “Wrath of Khan takes place twenty years later.” Listen, butt-munch, there’s only one film I’ve memorized all the dialoge to, and that’s Wrath of Khan, and in that film, everyone says that it’s FIFTEEN years later, not twenty!
Oh, and Leonard Nimoy? The Good Humor Man called and he wants his suit back.
On Khan’s chest: It’s a rubber chest people. According to the woman who played his love interest in the first appearance of Khan and the super beings at a Creature Con I went to two years ago. Anyone remember her name? Confirmed by Hikaru Sulu himself at the same con.
Silence in the room when the woman mentioned it as she specifically called (in a joking tone, mind you) Ricardo a “lying Mexican”. Everyone who heard this went dead silent. Excempt for me laughing between my teeth and sputtering. Most lovely train wresck ever.
To assist in defining who this woman is/was I will list the other speakers at the con and details. It was a Creature Con/Star Trek Con in Portland, OR in 2000. George Takei was the main draw and a hell of a nice guy. Also there was the villain from “The Patriot” Jason Isaacs who was also on Babylon 5 (never really watched it) and who apparently did all his own horse work in “The Patriot” (I asked because I always wonder if Hollywood typed can really even ride a horse). Also there was Herbert Jefferson Jr (“Boomer” from Battlestar Galactica. He was really cool. I have a picture with him he gave me for free.).
Anyhow According to those who worked with the man, the chest is plastic. Not that I ever doubted. That is a hairy man, can’t imagine such a hairless chest on him.
Fifteen years later than what? The original 5ym, or TMP?
Fifteen years since Space Seed, which if each season was a year would put it roughly 11 years after the historic 5 year mission. STMP supposedly takes place 3 years after they returned so STII takes place 8 years after STMP. Even though the actors have only aged 4 years. Oh well look how badly they supposedly aged in the 5 years from season 3. Gee if ididn’t know better they look at least 11 years older.
Ok that’s it I have to leave my basement and get some fresh air to dedorkify.
